Chapter 314 — Zhong Yongliang's Gloom
When they were almost at the school, Wei Zhao saw Tang Yun, Kang Xiaobo, and Liu Xinwen get off the bus together. He had not expected the three of them to have run into one another that morning.
Wei Zhao had long since heard that the buses Kang Xiaobo and Tang Yun took shared the same route. But before, though Kang Xiaobo knew Tang Yun, Tang Yun did not know Kang Xiaobo; now, Kang Xiaobo could openly stand beside Tang Yun, his "sister-in-law."
"Beep, beep..." Wei Zhao honked twice.
Kang Xiaobo frowned and turned around. Seeing a battered old van, his temper flared at once. What are you honking for in a beat-up old van like that? Besides, the road is plenty wide; you're not blocking anybody.
Tang Yun, though, found the shabby van a little familiar. Then she looked at the person sitting in the driver's seat, and a smile surfaced on her face. That backward glance, that charm, made Wei Zhao lose himself for a moment; he nearly drove straight into them, and only his quick reflexes saved him from a tragedy.
"Huh? Boss?" By now Kang Xiaobo had also made out that it was Wei Zhao driving. He slung his backpack over his shoulder and ran over, pulled open the passenger door and hopped in, then called to Tang Yun and Liu Xinwen ahead: "You two get in too?"
Tang Yun was a little shy about it. They were almost at the school; what need was there to ride? A couple of steps would do.
"All right..." But Liu Xinwen answered, and pulled Tang Yun into the van with her.
"Boss, this is your car?" Kang Xiaobo looked at the van, which could not have been more ramshackle, and was speechless. This was nothing like the Boss Lin he remembered!
"Ha, you guessed right! This car is the one that's actually mine." Wei Zhao casually handed the vehicle registration to Kang Xiaobo. "The transfer went through only yesterday."
Kang Xiaobo flipped through the registration. The name on it was indeed Wei Zhao's, and he was speechless again. So the car really was Wei Zhao's — which meant the Beetle from before really had been borrowed?
"Boss, yesterday when you said you were getting plates, you meant this car?" Kang Xiaobo handed the registration back and asked.
"That's right. Truth is, I'm quite poor. I just have a rich relative, that's all. I'm lucky to be able to drive this." Wei Zhao laughed.
Wei Zhao's words moved Kang Xiaobo and Liu Xinwen. So Wei Zhao was not the young master of legend after all? Still, the fact that he could hand over every last cent he had to pay Xiaofen's medical fees was truly admirable.
Tang Yun had long since noticed that Wei Zhao was different. She was curious about him. Call him a young master, and he did not quite fit; yet at times Wei Zhao was even more arrogant than those young masters.
As for this van, Tang Yun found it somewhat familiar — it seemed to be the one taken from Black Panther that night, which Wei Zhao had appropriated for himself. Though she did not much approve of behavior that bordered on robbery, Black Panther had gone too far; taking a single car from him as punishment was already very light.
Of course, Tang Yun did not yet know that Black Panther was still lying in a special-care ward in the hospital, the bones of his body shattered beyond recognition. If he wanted to recover, it would be at least half a year.
Wei Zhao parked behind the school on the snack street, and the four of them went into the school together.
The students had long grown used to seeing these four always together. Even the dean of academic affairs, Wang Zhifeng, nodded at them out of habit.
"Dean Wang!" Wei Zhao suddenly remembered his trip abroad and decided to ask for leave.
"Oh? Student Wei Zhao, is something the matter?" A smile instantly squeezed itself onto Wang Zhifeng's face. He already had a psychological scar: every time he had his affair with that female teacher, he could not help thinking that Wei Zhao knew about it. So the moment Wei Zhao called him, he could not help thinking about the affair again.
It was a strange loop, cause and effect circling round and round. Yet Wang Zhifeng was also a little afraid. This kid was forever doing things that put him in a bind — surely he was not coming to him for something again?
"It's like this. I may have some business these next few days, so I'd like to take a few days off. That's all right, isn't it?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I see. Of course it's all right. Go and take care of your business; I'll have a word with your homeroom teacher." Hearing this, Wang Zhifeng immediately relaxed. A trifle like this was nothing at all — and besides, Wei Zhao had skipped class more than once or twice.
After Wang Zhifeng left, Kang Xiaobo grew curious. "Boss, you need leave for something? What are you up to? It won't make you miss my second grandfather's birthday banquet this weekend, will it?"
Tang Yun also widened her eyes and stared fixedly at Wei Zhao. She wanted to ask too, but Kang Xiaobo had beaten her to it.
Only Liu Xinwen was uninterested. Whether Wei Zhao went to school or not made little difference to her.
"Ha, I've been invited to treat a patient." Naturally Wei Zhao could not reveal the trip abroad, so he gave a half-true, half-false answer.
"Treat a patient? You can treat patients? Oh, right... you know acupuncture..." Liu Xinwen was rather surprised, but then she thought of what had happened with Xiaofen that day and nodded.
"I'm only going to help out." Wei Zhao smiled.
"That's still impressive..." Kang Xiaobo gave a thumbs-up in admiration. "Boss, hurry up and improve your medical skills. If you could cure Xiaofen, that would be wonderful..."
"Ha, I'll do my best..." Wei Zhao nodded.
Both Kang Xiaobo and Tang Yun knew that Wei Zhao had some skill in medicine, so his going to see a patient did not strike them as odd. Last time Wei Zhao had told Tang Yun that he had a way to cure Xiaofen's illness, only not yet; so Tang Yun and Kang Xiaobo naturally assumed he meant his current medical skill was not enough.
Tang Yun had wanted to ask Wei Zhao whether he might look at her father's illness, but then she thought that he was helpless even with Xiaofen, and so she did not ask...
When they entered the classroom, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu were already in their seats. As Wei Zhao and Kang Xiaobo walked in, both looked up once, then lowered their heads and went back to their own business.
Zhong Yongliang was deeply depressed. Yesterday he had made his bold declaration, ready to write Gu Mengyao a love letter in blood — but then the whole thing had ended in the farce of his bleeding that would not stop!
Though no one brought it up today, Zhong Yongliang felt that everyone looked at him strangely, as if with mockery and derision. He did not know whether it was his own imagination, but in any case he could not sit still.
When Gao Xiaofu arrived, Zhong Yongliang hurriedly pulled him over and asked, "Xiaofu, do you think I should go on and write Gu Mengyao a love letter in blood?"
