Chapter 620 — Gu Pengzhan's Phone Call
Gu Mengyao shot Shen Yushu an annoyed glare, silently blaming her for sticking her nose in. If she wanted something to eat, why not just have Wei Zhao cook? Why send Su Taizao out to buy anything? Now look — this pest had planted himself here and wouldn't leave. How irritating.
Shen Yushu knew she'd caused trouble too, and she pouted — but she had a plan. She glanced at the time. An Jianwen had only seven minutes left to chat up Yao Yao.
An Jianwen, all elegance and charm, held forth grandly before Gu Mengyao, while she answered him with half-hearted, perfunctory words. Wei Zhao, naturally, couldn't be bothered to stay; he went straight back to his own room. Inside the villa, An Jianwen couldn't pull any tricks, so Wei Zhao didn't need to keep too close an eye on him.
"Oh, it's cartoon time! Today's Saturday — the theatrical version of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf is on!" Shen Yushu bounced up from the sofa, switched on the TV, and used the remote to flip to a channel. Sure enough, the familiar theme music of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf came drifting out.
An Jianwen was long accustomed to Shen Yushu's flighty, scatterbrained ways. He thought to himself that though Shen Yushu was beautiful, who could possibly withstand a personality like that? Thank goodness he liked Gu Mengyao — otherwise, if he ended up with a girl like Shen Yushu, his life would be finished.
Paying Shen Yushu no mind as she settled in to watch cartoons, An Jianwen kept holding forth to Gu Mengyao.
"Hey, stop talking, I can't hear a thing!" Shen Yushu waved a hand at An Jianwen impatiently. "What kind of manners is that? Other people are watching TV here!"
An Jianwen was about to explode with rage. What business was it of Shen Yushu's if he talked? But he didn't dare cross her, didn't dare talk back. First, Shen Yushu belonged to the Chen family — a scion of a great clan; who would dare provoke her? Even with the Fire Wolf Gang at his back, he didn't represent the Fire Wolf Gang, and he hadn't the guts to make an enemy of the Chen family.
"Yao Yao, shall we go over there to talk?" An Jianwen swallowed his anger, keeping the smile on his face, and gestured toward the dining room.
"I want to watch cartoons too. I haven't seen this episode either." Gu Mengyao pointed at the TV. "You watch with us."
"Huh?" An Jianwen nearly jumped out of his seat. How old was he, watching cartoons? If word got out, he'd be laughed to death. But then he wavered — this was the first time Gu Mengyao had invited him to do something together. Watching TV together was about the same as going to a movie, wasn't it? He might as well treat it as Gu Mengyao asking him out to a film.
At that thought, An Jianwen's heart settled into balance. "All right, then let's watch together!"
Watching cartoons meant no talking, of course. An Jianwen had never seen this animated series before; catching it cold, he couldn't really get into it, and could only sit there gritting his teeth and enduring. The time felt agonizingly slow. And what was with Su Taizao? Why wasn't he back yet? Hurry back, so he could escape this predicament.
What a miscalculation. Had he known Shen Yushu wanted to watch cartoons, why would he have stayed here at all? He'd have been better off leaving. When he truly couldn't bear it anymore, An Jianwen got up and went outside to call Su Taizao. "Where are you? Why aren't you back yet? Buying snacks — does it take a year?"
"Huh? Brother An, didn't you tell me to take my time coming back?" Su Taizao had parked by the roadside and was leisurely smoking a cigarette and enjoying the night view. An Jianwen's shout gave him quite a start.
"Enough, get back here right now! Hurry up!" An Jianwen said, thoroughly disgruntled.
"See, Yao Yao? Aren't I amazing?" Shen Yushu said smugly.
"Heh, clever girl. Otherwise he'd have bored me to death." Gu Mengyao reflected that her best friend was not the least bit foolish — on the contrary, she was quite clever; it was just that the way she expressed it was a little peculiar.
Soon Su Taizao returned, lugging in a pile of fruit and boxed meals. Shen Yushu invited An Jianwen to eat while watching TV with them. An Jianwen, sweating with embarrassment, declined. He truly couldn't take it anymore — if he couldn't talk to Gu Mengyao, what was the point of staying?
"Go call Wei Zhao and have him come eat with us." After An Jianwen and Su Taizao had left, Gu Mengyao opened the boxed meals Su Taizao had bought and set them on the coffee table.
Su Taizao had bought five boxed meals in all, and not a cheap grade either — they couldn't have been inexpensive. Clearly two of them had been meant for him and An Jianwen, but they wouldn't be eating them.
"Oh..." Shen Yushu eyed the delicious boxed meals on the coffee table, mouth watering. She didn't want to get up; she wished she could stuff them into her belly right that instant.
Seeing that Shen Yushu hadn't reacted, Gu Mengyao felt a little helpless. She gave a huff and got up to call Wei Zhao, knocking twice on his door. "Come out and eat!"
Gu Mengyao didn't know herself why she insisted on calling Wei Zhao. Perhaps because he cooked for her and Xiaoshu every day, and she couldn't very well eat without calling him — that would be far too ungrateful.
"They're gone?" Wei Zhao had just been lying on his bed texting Tang Yun, telling her he'd already contacted Er Goudan's people and the goods would be delivered in a while, and that she shouldn't worry about Tang Jucheng's injuries.
"They're gone. Su Taizao bought boxed meals. You want some?" Gu Mengyao pointed at the boxes on the coffee table.
"Sure, saves me from fixing dinner tonight." Wei Zhao came out with Gu Mengyao. On Saturdays, Uncle Qing generally didn't send food over, so most of the time Wei Zhao had to figure something out himself.
By the time Wei Zhao sat down on the sofa, Shen Yushu had nearly finished a whole box, with no sign of stopping.
"Eat a little less, or you'll stuff yourself sick," Wei Zhao warned.
"No more eating!" Gu Mengyao, also afraid Shen Yushu would have another problem, put away the remaining two boxes lest she eat them all too.
"Oh, fine..." Shen Yushu looked a little wronged, but she didn't dare disobey — and she was afraid of stuffing herself sick again.
After the meal, Wei Zhao cleared away the boxes. The two remaining meals went into the fridge; reheated in the morning, they'd do nicely for breakfast.
Once he'd finished tidying up, he unexpectedly received a call from Gu Pengzhan.
"Uncle Chu?" Wei Zhao answered the phone. "Is something the matter?"
"Mm, two things." Gu Pengzhan said. "Yao Yao isn't beside you, is she? Is it convenient to talk?"
Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. Did this matter need to be kept from Gu Mengyao and the others?
