Chapter 638 — Please Help Me
But Yang Huaijun's going there would be of little use either. Even if he learned that Qiu Lingshan had lost contact at the relay station, it would change nothing, for the people at the relay station had already left, and what they left behind contained no valuable clues at all.
The criminals were cunning in the extreme; they had left no opening whatsoever. Just like that, Qiu Lingshan had vanished without a trace.
However anxious Yang Huaijun might be, there was nothing he could do. For now, all they could do was wait for the criminals to make contact with the police of their own accord. The other side had clearly already known Qiu Lingshan's identity, and yet they had still taken her — their purpose was plain enough: either to flaunt their defiance before the police, or to use her as a bargaining chip, to negotiate with the police and achieve their ends.
Either way, though, they still had to wait for the criminals to contact the police first.
"That Xiao Song — she truly never lets anyone rest easy!" Yang Huaijun sat in his office, rubbing his drowsy eyes. He had not slept all night; a whole night of meetings discussing the direction of the investigation had left him feeling rather worn out.
Still, it was far better than before. Wei Zhao's medication was remarkably effective — at least, in the past, the consequence of staying up all night like this would have been an attack, forcing him to use drugs to suppress it. But now, apart from a little fatigue, there was no discomfort at all. Of course, fatigue was a normal reaction; even a healthy person would feel unwell after a night without rest.
Wei Zhao? At the thought of Wei Zhao, Yang Huaijun suddenly wondered — might Wei Zhao have a way? If anyone could find Qiu Lingshan now, perhaps only Wei Zhao could. The only question was whether he would be willing to help.
Yang Huaijun smiled bitterly. It seemed he would have to trouble Wei Zhao after all. After hesitating a moment, he dialed Wei Zhao's number.
"Xiao Yi?" Every time Yang Huaijun addressed Wei Zhao that way, he felt a little awkward. He still preferred to call him "Eagle," or "Captain." The name Xiao Yi just did not sit right with him.
"Brother Jun, what is it?" Wei Zhao had first driven to the hospital to pick up Tang Yun, and had just been about to start the car when he received Yang Huaijun's call.
"Xiao Song has likely been captured by the kidney-harvesting ring." Yang Huaijun dispensed with pleasantries and went straight to the reason for his call.
"Oh. A reckless girl like her — getting caught is only natural." Wei Zhao was not the least bit surprised; if anything, he thought it entirely expected. Had he known she was such a hothead, he would not have called to tip her off yesterday.
"Reckless, perhaps, but the young are all impulsive..." Yang Huaijun smiled bitterly. "Here's what happened. Yesterday Xiao Song received a tip-off and learned the criminals' location, and then..."
"Oh, I know about that. I was the one who told her about Binjia Village." Wei Zhao cut him off. "She went there herself, didn't she? Tried to go deep behind enemy lines, got herself caught, and now she can't get out?"
"You... you guessed all of it?" Yang Huaijun was somewhat surprised. He had not expected the information to have come from Wei Zhao. It seemed the two of them were in contact privately — and on rather good terms, at that. In that case, Wei Zhao surely would not stand by and do nothing about Qiu Lingshan.
"Simple logic." Wei Zhao smiled. Given Qiu Lingshan's temperament, such a move was hardly surprising. "What do you need me for?"
"Can you find her? Or get her out?" Between Yang Huaijun and Wei Zhao, there was no need for false pleasantries; Yang Huaijun spoke plainly.
"I'll try." Wei Zhao felt a headache coming on. That Qiu Lingshan really knew how to stir up trouble — he was in for a busy time. He had not particularly wanted to get involved, but since Yang Huaijun had asked, he had no reason to refuse.
"Thank you, Eagle." Yang Huaijun let out a breath of relief. Wei Zhao did not make promises lightly, but once he gave his word, he would surely strive to see it through.
"Ha, I'll hang up first. Let me think about how to handle this." Wei Zhao said nothing more and ended the call.
To find Qiu Lingshan now, the only way was through An Jianwen. It looked as though he really would have to pay An Jianwen another visit. Whether the man harvested other people's kidneys was none of Wei Zhao's concern; even if he knew, he would not go playing the righteous hero.
But now that Qiu Lingshan was involved — and since Wei Zhao found this An Jianwen rather detestable, and could tell the young lady loathed him too — he supposed he might as well do himself the favor and take care of the man along the way.
"What's wrong? Is everything all right?" Tang Yun had caught the gist of it from the side, though not clearly, and asked with some concern.
"It's nothing. A friend has gone missing and asked me to help find her." Wei Zhao said, "Never mind her for now. Let me have a look at that wound on your head."
"It's almost healed..." Tang Yun was a little shy, evading Wei Zhao's gaze. She lowered her head, not daring to look at him.
"Ha, not bad. No scar left behind — otherwise it wouldn't look good in the future." Wei Zhao was quite satisfied with his own medicine.
"And if it had left a scar, would you still want me?" Tang Yun very much wanted to know the answer.
"Your worry is unnecessary. Even if it had, it could be removed." Wei Zhao said.
"Oh..." Tang Yun was a little disappointed. She had not heard the answer she wanted. She did not know why Wei Zhao liked her — whether it was her looks or something else. It was a very uneasy feeling.
But Wei Zhao did not quite understand a girl's heart, and did not notice Tang Yun's disappointment.
"By the way, how is the shantytown demolition going?" Wei Zhao asked.
"It's been halted for now. According to Liu Xinwen, there's no news — a lot of families are waiting to see how things play out..." Tang Yun could not help finding it a little amusing as she said this. "They all believe the Qibing Building collapsed because of quality problems, so now they won't trade even if they're offered new apartments."
"Ha, then let's leave them be for now." Wei Zhao had little interest in whether Zhao Qibing's place was demolished or not. Though when the demolition did happen, he supposed he could look the man up and ask for a bit of compensation.
"Why don't you go to school with your employers?" In her heart, Tang Yun remained very wary of Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.
"Someone picks them up and drops them off." Wei Zhao shrugged.
"Oh. Then how long do you have to keep doing this?" Tang Yun asked.
"I'm not sure either. That depends on what my old man wants." Wei Zhao shook his head. "You seem to have a lot of hostility toward them?"
"I do not!" Tang Yun refused to admit it.
When they arrived at the school, Wei Zhao and Tang Yun parted ways at the door of the Senior Three, Class Nine classroom. Everyone at school already knew about the relationship between Lin and Tang, so Tang Yun no longer had any reason to deliberately avoid it. Besides, the sudden arrival of Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had put Tang Yun on her guard.
A woman's intuition told Tang Yun that things were absolutely not as simple as Wei Zhao made them out to be. Though Wei Zhao said they were merely his employers, that night their attitude had been nothing like what one would show a bodyguard — or an employee, for that matter.
