Chapter 664 — Just What Level of Strength Is He?
The driver was filled with admiration for Wei Zhao. Only when Wei Zhao brought the car to a stop in front of the hospital building did the man come back to his senses — this fellow was a god of driving! He glanced at the time: nineteen minutes! A miracle, utterly unbelievable!
Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that his beat-up car, worth a few tens of thousands and driven for five years, had the makings of a sports car — that it could even outrun one?
As Wei Zhao got out, his phone rang again. He had assumed it was Shen Yushu calling to ask whether he had arrived, but the caller ID showed Guan Xuemin's name.
Walking into the hospital, Wei Zhao answered: "Hello, Grandpa Guan. Is something the matter?"
Anxious about the young lady's safety, Wei Zhao stayed polite on the phone with Guan Xuemin, yet a thread of impatience ran through his voice; he wanted to finish the call as quickly as possible.
"Xiaoyi, where are you? If you have no pressing business, could you come over?" Guan Xuemin had caught the urgency in Wei Zhao's voice as well, and guessed that Wei Zhao might have something on his hands — which only made his own heart clench.
If Wei Zhao could not come, then there truly would be no hope left at all.
"I'm at the Second People's Hospital. Something has happened to a friend, and I'm in a hurry to treat them. I'm afraid I have no time just now!" Wei Zhao answered quickly. "I'm sorry, Grandpa Guan. When I'm done, may I call you back?"
Even as he spoke, Wei Zhao had already pushed the door open and charged into the emergency room. A doctor tried to hold him back — but how could anyone match Wei Zhao's speed? In the blink of an eye he was inside.
Guan Xuemin was slightly taken aback by Wei Zhao's words. Wei Zhao was at the Second People's Hospital too? And why had there been an echo when he spoke? Guan Xuemin looked up, and there was a figure rushing toward him — who else could it be but Wei Zhao?
Wei Zhao had come? Could Wei Zhao's friend be one of these poisoned students? The moment the possibility struck him, Guan Xuemin's heart eased. If that were so, then these students truly had hope!
Guan Xuemin rose at once and followed him out. "Xiaoyi!"
Hearing his own name called, Wei Zhao was startled; listening closely, it was Guan Xuemin's voice. He glanced at the phone by his ear — the sound had not come from the phone, but from behind him.
Wei Zhao turned around, surprised. "Grandpa Guan? What are you doing here?"
"Is your friend one of the comatose students too?" Guan Xuemin did not answer his question, but asked urgently instead.
"Oh?" Wei Zhao was briefly startled, then began to understand. "I see, Grandpa Guan. You called me here for the students as well, didn't you? But whether or not there is someone you know among them, I can only go and see my friend first. My apologies — I'll come over once I've had a look."
Wei Zhao politely stated his position. Though his relationship with Guan Xuemin was a good one, since the one lying comatose was not Guan Xuemin's, Wei Zhao still had to see to the young lady's condition first.
"Heh, there's no one I know among them. Go and see your friend. So long as the cause of the coma is clear, treatment can begin; I was merely invited here to examine the patients." Guan Xuemin waved a hand, signaling Wei Zhao to set his mind at ease and concentrate on treating his friend.
Wei Zhao nodded. So Guan Xuemin had been worried about these students' condition — he had misjudged him.
"All right, then I'll go see my friend first!" Wei Zhao nodded and began searching for Gu Mengyao's room. He had not gone far when he spotted Gu Pengzhan, Uncle Qing, and Shen Yushu in one of the rooms — clearly this was Gu Mengyao's isolation room.
Wei Zhao pushed the door open and went in. Gu Pengzhan did not know much about Wei Zhao's medical skill; when Xiaoshu had called Wei Zhao earlier, Gu Pengzhan had assumed she was simply grasping at straws in her panic, and had never truly believed Wei Zhao could cure his daughter. Uncle Qing, however, was lost in thought. He knew Wei Zhao's strength was no simple matter — two Yellow Rank experts had died at his hands. What kind of ferocious skill would that take?
At first Uncle Qing had suspected Wei Zhao of being at the late Yellow Rank. But a few days ago he heard that Wei Zhao had traded a palm strike with Uncle Zhu, the man at Zhao Qibing's side, and Uncle Qing was instantly stunned. Uncle Qing had of course heard of Uncle Zhu's reputation; years ago in the martial world, Uncle Zhu — Zhu Laoliu — had been a name that rang loud and clear, a man of early Mystic Rank strength with scarcely a rival to be found.
Later he heard that Uncle Zhu had been taken in by a certain family, and had unexpectedly become one of Zhao Qibing's men. And a fighter like that — even if he had made no breakthrough in the past dozen years, his strength could not possibly have regressed; early Mystic Rank he certainly was. Yet after trading palms with Wei Zhao, the man seemed none the worse, showing no sign of injury at all. That was what astonished Uncle Qing.
Just what was Wei Zhao's strength? Could he too be an early Mystic Rank expert? Only an expert of the same rank could go head-to-head with Uncle Zhu. Of course, if Wei Zhao were of the mid Mystic Rank, then in a direct clash he might not come off well, but he would certainly be able to kill Uncle Zhu.
Now Uncle Zhu was not dead, and Wei Zhao was not injured — which was rather strange. If Wei Zhao truly was far stronger than Uncle Zhu, then escaping injury was possible; but if Wei Zhao truly was far stronger than Uncle Zhu, could Uncle Zhu still be alive? He would surely be dead by now, wouldn't he?
A mid Mystic Rank expert in such a head-on clash could kill his opponent — and would certainly be injured himself. Yet Wei Zhao was uninjured and had not killed Uncle Zhu. The only possibilities were that Wei Zhao had not used his full strength, or that his medical skill was so extraordinary that he had healed himself.
And most importantly, Wei Zhao had indeed been injured that night, and had even treated his wounds at Fatty Lai's home. Uncle Qing did not know the circumstances and had not seen how grave Wei Zhao's injuries were, but from conjecture alone he could judge that they were likely not light.
It was precisely for this reason that Uncle Qing suspected Wei Zhao's medical skill was also highly accomplished.
When Gu Pengzhan saw Guan Xuemin enter together with Wei Zhao, he was delighted. After all, Guan Xuemin was known as Doctor Guan; if he could take a look at his daughter, perhaps there was hope? But Gu Pengzhan soon noticed that Guan Xuemin seemed to defer to Wei Zhao, always trailing half a step behind him, his expression most respectful — which left Gu Pengzhan rather puzzled.
