Chapter 742 — A Group Photo as a Keepsake

The Blossom Guardian

Now her family was probably the best-off in the whole shantytown; while everyone else was still waiting for the demolition, her family was already living in an apartment building!

Liu Xinwen sounded a little envious: "Yunyun, you really are lucky. We're still waiting over here for the demolition, and who knows when we'll get our compensation. There's still no final word on exactly how the developer will compensate us or how much — day in and day out, it's got everyone on edge!"

"It's only because my dad's leg got smashed and they paid compensation," Tang Yun sighed. She wasn't sure whether it was because her father's leg was broken or because she had met Wei Zhao. The earth-shaking changes in her family had not escaped Tang Yun's eyes; she had taken them all to heart.

It was all thanks to Wei Zhao, and so sometimes Tang Yun treated Wei Zhao with a heart full of gratitude.

"If someone would pay me three million, I'd gladly have both my legs smashed!" Liu Xinwen really did envy Tang Yun a little. Her words were a bit extreme, but that was the truth of it. The residents of the shantytown were basically the lowest of the low, the toiling masses. Anyone with money — who would live here?

The people here were either laid-off workers or the unemployed; everyone scraped together food and clothing for their families by running small businesses or doing hard labor. Liu Xinwen's parents, for instance, both worked for others, and their monthly wages were just barely enough to keep the household running. The family had practically no savings at all.

Never mind buying a house — if they lost this one and had to rent, they would be stretched to the breaking point.

"I hope the developer has a bit of conscience and pays everyone a decent sum. Then, when the time comes, I'll have Wei Zhao help out — buying a bargain apartment in a worse location shouldn't be a problem..." Tang Yun looked toward Wei Zhao. She could ignore other people, but Liu Xinwen and Xiaofen were friends she had grown up playing with. How could she stand by and watch their families slide into ruin?

But Tang Yun didn't want to put Wei Zhao on the spot either, so she only asked him to help them buy a bargain apartment in a worse location — the leftover units with poor layouts and bad floors that the developer sold off cheap when clearing out the last of the inventory. Wei Zhao had connections; he should be able to manage it, shouldn't he?

"Ha, of course, no problem." Wei Zhao was fairly familiar with Liu Xinwen too. "Leftover units in worse locations should come quite a bit cheaper."

"Thank you both so much..." Hearing Wei Zhao's words, Liu Xinwen was moved. She felt Wei Zhao was a man of real loyalty and honor, and that Tang Yun's heart being wholly fixed on him was not misplaced. If it had been Kang Zhaoming, he would never in a million years have done such a thing.

As for whether the layout and location were good, Liu Xinwen didn't much care anymore. However bad it was, it was still an apartment building — far better than the shantytown, wasn't it?

The three of them returned to school together. Wei Zhao and Tang Yun parted ways at the door of Class Nine's classroom, and Wei Zhao went into his own class.

There weren't many people in the classroom. Clearly very few had come to school today, and with it being the noon break, there were even fewer.

The Young Miss and Shen Yushu were both there, reading at their seats. Seeing Wei Zhao come in, the Young Miss raised her head and glanced at him, then lowered it again and fixed her eyes on her book. Shen Yushu wanted to call out to Wei Zhao, but feared Gu Mengyao wouldn't like it; she opened her mouth, then closed it again and went on reading.

Wei Zhao shook his head and went back to his own seat.

Kang Xiaobo was actually not there. The kid had probably taken the day to keep Xiaofen company. Wei Zhao sat at his desk with nothing to do for a while.

"Yao Yao, Shield Bro's back. Should we ask him to take a photo with us as a keepsake?" Shen Yushu took the digital camera out of her schoolbag.

Senior year was almost over, and with it the three years of high school life. Today there happened to be no classes, so Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had brought the camera and taken some pictures around campus, recording this last stretch of high school life.

"What do we want him for?" Gu Mengyao was a little tempted, but she asked the question back instead.

"Once we graduate, Shield Bro will be leaving..." Shen Yushu's voice was a little downcast. "Yao Yao, you were right. Shield Bro can't stay with us forever — there's always a day when we have to part..."

Shen Yushu's words tightened something in Gu Mengyao's heart. Wei Zhao was leaving? Yes... in the end, he was going to leave. Once high school was over, what reason did he have to stay here?

The people in her father's company who had been hostile to her had all been driven off by Wei Zhao, and her tiresome suitors — Zhong Yongliang and An Jianwen both — had each had a kidney cut out and were lying in the hospital. Wei Zhao's mission could be considered successfully completed...

Perhaps, once high school graduation came and she and Xiaoshu went off to university and moved into the dorms, Wei Zhao would no longer stay on at the villa.

What would he do? Rent a place with Tang Yun and live together?

At the thought of that possibility, the Young Miss's feelings grew complicated. He had been living with her and Xiaoshu, and now he was going to live with Tang Yun instead... Was she supposed to give up this happiness of hers?

But what if she didn't give it up? Wei Zhao wasn't anything of hers — by what right would he stay at her side? Just for that thirty-thousand-yuan salary? Gu Mengyao found it almost laughable. Wei Zhao didn't even bat an eye at three million; what was thirty thousand?

"Then let's keep a memento..." Gu Mengyao sighed. "You text him."

Shen Yushu took out her phone and quickly sent Wei Zhao a text message.

Wei Zhao was bored when his phone buzzed. He glanced at it: a message from Shen Yushu.

"Come to the sports field and take a photo with me and Yao Yao as a keepsake?"

Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. In the past the Young Miss would never have revealed her relationship with him at school. What was going on today? Was this Xiaoshu's idea?

Wei Zhao didn't reply to the text either. He simply stood up and walked toward the classroom door, trusting that Shen Yushu would understand what he meant.

Sure enough, not long after Wei Zhao went out, the Young Miss and Shen Yushu followed. In the corridor, Shen Yushu called out to him: "Shield Bro!"

Gu Mengyao hesitated, wanting to say something, but then thought: plenty of people already knew about her relationship with Wei Zhao, so what was there to be careful about? Besides, she had already declared to Tang Yun that she would compete with her for Wei Zhao. Hiding it now would only make it look as if she were afraid of her.

At that thought, the Young Miss shed her earlier aloofness toward Wei Zhao, lifted her head, and pulled Shen Yushu along. "Xiaoshu, why don't we take a group photo here in the corridor? We can even get the class plaque in the shot."

"Okay!" Shen Yushu ran over and handed the camera to Wei Zhao. "Take one of us together!"
