Chapter 872 — No One Answers

The Blossom Guardian

This had always been one thing Tang Yun could never work out. She had once assumed that Wei Zhao was the young master of some wealthy family, someone Wang Zhifeng dared not offend. But as Wei Zhao's mysterious identity came to light—he was nothing more than Gu Mengyao's personal bodyguard—how could Wang Zhifeng possibly be afraid of him?

Even Zhong Yongliang, nephew of a former school board director, never got much deference from Wang Zhifeng, did he?

"Heh... I caught him fooling around with a girl at school." Wei Zhao made no secret of it.

"Huh?" Tang Yun's eyes went wide. "Fooling around? Him? At school?"

"His mistress, I think? A teacher at the school." Wei Zhao shrugged. "I happened to walk in on them, and he got cold feet..."

"So that's how it was..." Tang Yun did not know what to say. So that was the reason—that was why Wei Zhao had dared to pursue her so brazenly at school... She wondered whether she ought to thank Wang Zhifeng. If Wei Zhao had not caught him in the act, would Wei Zhao have been so bold?

"Let's go eat first." Wei Zhao pulled the car up in front of a breakfast stall by the roadside and tugged Tang Yun out of the car...

"Sister Yaoyao, we're out of red ink at school. Should we buy another bottle?" Shen Yushu suddenly thought of something and said to Gu Mengyao.

"Oh? Then let's buy a bottle." Gu Mengyao nodded, then said to Uncle Qing, "Uncle Qing, when we pass a stationery shop, please pull over—we need to buy a bottle of red ink."

"Of course, Miss Gu!" Uncle Qing nodded.

Senior year of high school was thick with exams—a big one every three days, a small one every two. Most of them, though, were graded by the students themselves, for the teachers no longer had the spare time to mark all those papers. After each exam the answer sheets were shuffled and handed out at random, and the teacher simply went through the answer to every question aloud.

Gu Mengyao's paper had once been graded by Wei Zhao—though back then, the two of them had not exactly been on good terms.

So red fountain-pen ink was a necessity of senior-year life. Since Shen Yushu said they were out, Gu Mengyao naturally had to buy another bottle.

Uncle Qing parked in front of a stationery shop by the roadside, and Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu went in to buy red ink. They had just gotten back into the car and settled into their seats, and Uncle Qing was about to start the engine, when two black Land Rovers boxed his Bentley in, one in front and one behind, leaving him no room to move.

Uncle Qing's heart lurched, and he was instantly on his guard. Those two Land Rovers had clearly been placed there on purpose—no one parked like that otherwise.

"Miss Gu, be careful. Call Mr. Lin, quickly!" Years of experience had let Uncle Qing catch the whiff of danger.

Sure enough, the doors of both Land Rovers flew open in an instant. From the one in front stepped a tall, powerfully built man in white; from the one behind came two men in black, each with his right hand resting on his belt. Once out, they took up positions on either side of the Bentley's rear door.

Uncle Qing locked the doors and drew a deep breath. The two big men in black behind him were not much to fear—but the man in white in front exerted a pressure on Uncle Qing unlike anything he had ever felt.

Yet the man in white seemed to pay no mind at all to the locked door. He simply reached out and seized it—with a bang, the door was wrenched clean off. Bentley doors were sturdy enough as it was, and Gu Pengzhan's car in particular was a custom armored model; yet in this white-robed man's eyes it was something he could destroy with the greatest of ease.

Uncle Qing's expression turned grim. These visitors meant no good, and they were certainly martial artists—mid-stage of the Yellow Rank at the very least.

With the door torn off by the man in white, Uncle Qing could hardly stay sitting in the car; against an opponent of this caliber, that would be nothing short of waiting to die. The man posed such a threat to him that he could not protect Gu Mengyao even if he wanted to.

There was nothing for it—Uncle Qing steeled himself and got out of the car, hoping only to buy some time so that Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu could call Wei Zhao. But since the front door had already been wrenched open by the man in white, the two men in black had no trouble unlocking the doors from the front; they opened the rear door, drew two dark pistols from their waists, and each leveled one at Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.

"Hand over your phones!" the man in black barked coldly at Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.

"Oh..." Shen Yushu obediently handed over her phone. A wise girl does not fight when the odds are against her; these two looked murderous, and Shen Yushu knew this was no joke. She said nothing more.

Gu Mengyao had just been about to call Wei Zhao, but now it seemed she would not get the chance. With some helplessness she too handed her phone to the man in black—though she had already gotten through to Wei Zhao, and had not hung up.

The man in black took Gu Mengyao's phone, glanced at it, hung up at once, and switched the phone off. Then he gave Gu Mengyao a cold look. "Don't try to be clever! Get out of the car. Into the car behind."

When Wei Zhao received Gu Mengyao's call, he was eating breakfast with Tang Yun. The young lady's phone rang twice, and before he could even pick up, the caller hung up, which left him momentarily stunned. He called back, and the line told him the phone was off.

Had the battery died? Wei Zhao did not think much of it. After all, Gu Mengyao was driven to school by Uncle Qing every day, and that set his mind at ease.

"What is it?" Tang Yun asked, seeing that Wei Zhao had made a call and failed to get through.

"Nothing. The young lady just called—rang twice and hung up. I called back, and it said the phone was off..." Wei Zhao shrugged. "Maybe the battery's dead."

"Oh..." Hearing that it was the young lady calling, Tang Yun pouted and said nothing more, a faint sense of loss in her heart.

"What's wrong?" Wei Zhao asked, noticing that Tang Yun seemed a little down.

"Nothing..." Tang Yun shook her head. "Nothing's happened to the young lady, has it? Why don't you give Shen Yushu a call?"

Wei Zhao thought that made sense. If Gu Mengyao's phone would not go through, then call Shen Yushu's. He dialed Shen Yushu's number—and Shen Yushu's phone, too, reported that it was switched off. Wei Zhao frowned. Something felt wrong.

Gu Mengyao's phone suddenly dying was possible enough—but how could both Gu Mengyao's and Shen Yushu's phones be dead at once? And there was no dead zone for cell signal on the road from the villa district to the school; it could not be a matter of no reception.

At that thought, Wei Zhao tensed. He quickly dialed Uncle Qing's number—but the call went through, and no one answered...
