Chapter 886 — General Mighty the Mighty: "Whoosh!" Another Musketeer Came Flying Out and Fell Dead to the Ground
The situation was far too horrifying, and there had been no warning at all. One musketeer after another had died, and at last fear took hold of them. They were pirates to begin with, men who licked blood off the edge of the blade, whose trade was staking their heads on their belts.
They did not fear death. What they feared was dying like this, for no reason they could name. What on earth was going on? Wei Zhao was still standing there without having moved an inch, and already several of their own were dead!
And so the musketeers went mad, raking the spot where Wei Zhao stood with wild gunfire. They were certain Wei Zhao was behind it all; kill him, and everything would be settled.
"Bang!" "Bang!" "Bang!" The shots rang out in chaos, and yet, along with the gunfire, men kept flying out of their hiding places — and dying.
"Wahh! Yahhh! Fire! Fire, kill him!" Zhen Yingjun bellowed, beside himself with rage. "What the hell is this? Wei Zhao, what have you done?"
A cold smile hung at the corner of Wei Zhao's mouth. The musketeers? Just wait, all of you, and die slowly. Since you chose to lie in ambush here, you should have been ready to die.
Contemptuous as he was of these musketeers, Wei Zhao did not let down his guard. These men had gone completely mad and were firing at random now; some, hoping to keep death's curse from finding them, were spraying bullets in every direction...
Even as he dodged the bullets, Wei Zhao moved swiftly toward Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu. He was afraid that in their frenzy these men would hurt the two young ladies.
"I'll take you with me!" Zhang Wushan was a minor leader among the musketeers, but he was on the verge of total collapse. Watching his comrades die one after another, he did not know what to do. Then his younger brother Zhang Wuyu had just now gone flying out with a "whoosh" and fallen to his death — and Zhang Wushan went utterly mad.
He no longer cared about concealing himself. He leaped straight out of the ambush position and began firing wildly. His mind had broken; he could no longer tell friend from foe, and he even fired toward Zhen Yingjun.
Alarmed, Zhen Yingjun hurriedly ducked behind Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.
The instant the gun in Zhang Wushan's hand went off, Wei Zhao's brows knitted sharply. Heedless of everything else, he sprinted toward Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu — for Zhang Wushan had fired that shot in Gu Mengyao's direction, and by his present angle of aim, barring accidents, it would certainly strike the young lady.
There was no time left for Wei Zhao to call out a warning, for the young lady's hands and feet were bound with rope, and flight was absolutely impossible. Wei Zhao gritted his teeth, flung himself in front of Gu Mengyao — and in almost the same instant, a bullet buried itself in the base of his thigh.
Damn! Wei Zhao broke into a cold sweat. Why this spot again? Last time, in the bank, a thug's bullet had wounded him in the base of the thigh, and when he went to the hospital to have the bullet taken out, he had been thoroughly embarrassed. He had never expected it to be the same place this time...
"Ah!" Gu Mengyao screamed. She too realized that Wei Zhao had been shot! He — he had taken a bullet for her?
Last time, at the bank, it had also been Wei Zhao — also Wei Zhao, also at the young lady's side — who was shot, yet Gu Mengyao had felt nothing particular then. But now, why did her heart hurt so? Gu Mengyao felt as though that bullet had struck her heart, leaving her with a wrenching, tugging ache...
"Wei Zhao, how are you?" Gu Mengyao wanted to reach out and touch his wound, but her hands and feet were tied fast, leaving her unable to move.
"So touching! Sister Yaoyao, Brother Shield took a bullet for you! When you get back, you'll simply have to give yourself to him in marriage!" Shen Yushu declared with a sigh.
"What do you mean, give myself to him in marriage? Look at the state we're in, and you're still spouting such nonsense! Can't you see Wei Zhao's been shot?" Hearing Shen Yushu's words, Gu Mengyao was caught between laughter and tears. Whether she was deliberately sidestepping the question or simply worried about Wei Zhao's wound, she did not want to talk about giving herself to anyone in marriage...
Yet in her heart, Gu Mengyao was wondering: Wei Zhao — if he truly asked her to give herself to him, would she? Would she? It seemed she would... How could that be?
"Oh, Brother Shield is a doctor. A little wound like this is nothing." Shen Yushu was calm in the face of danger. Seeing that Wei Zhao was still standing and seemed none the worse — he had not even frowned after being hit — she knew he must be fine.
Wei Zhao was indeed fine; it was only one bullet. Shen Yushu was right: Wei Zhao was a doctor himself, and in the instant he threw himself in the bullet's path he had chosen his position, avoiding bone and artery, so the bullet had merely lodged in muscle. It did not matter if it was not removed right away.
Otherwise, after being shot last time, he could never have climbed into the thugs' car and snatched their guns from them along the way.
At this moment, however, Wei Zhao had no mind to spare for his wound. His right hand flicked swiftly, and a silver needle was held between his fingers. This Zhang Wushan had gone mad; Wei Zhao had to finish him quickly. He had not expected Zhen Yingjun's men to have such poor nerves — frightened out of their wits already?
In truth, it was not that the musketeers were weak-nerved. They had spent their days at sea, killing and plundering, and their courage had long since been trained up to be bigger than a basketball. It was only that today's situation was too eerie. They did not fear being cut down by a blade, nor a bullet through the skull, but this sort of "flying man through the air" death was something they had never seen before! It was too horrifying!
Wei Zhao was just about to finish Zhang Wushan off when, before the silver needle had even left his hand, General Mighty leaped out. With nimble grace he sprang up behind Zhang Wushan and planted his four paws on the man's back — and so Zhang Wushan, like his comrades, went flying with a "whoosh," crashed to the ground, and died on the spot.
"Sister Yaoyao, General Mighty is so badass!" Although Shen Yushu had already known that those musketeers had been killed by General Mighty, seeing the dog slaughter a man with her own eyes still left her dumbstruck.
Gu Mengyao's eyes went wide as well, staring at the General Mighty she had raised for ten years. That was possible too? How had she never noticed that General Mighty had such a formidable side to him? Hmm... it seemed that ever since he was injured last time and Wei Zhao healed him, he had been a little different?
This time Zhen Yingjun finally understood how his men had died. Kicked to death by a dog? This world was simply insane.
"A Yellow-rank... dog?" A flicker of shock crossed Ma Zhu's face.
