Chapter 897 — A Difficult Journey

The Blossom Guardian

"Oh..." Shen Yushu nodded. She knew that Sister Yaoyao must be in terrible pain, that she must be enduring it; but at a moment like this, she did not know what to say either. Was she supposed to tell Sister Yaoyao to set Wei Zhao down and rest a while? That was out of the question!

The two of them stumbled down the mountain. Gu Mengyao lost count of how many times she fell to her knees, and Shen Yushu lost count of how many times she landed hard on her backside — she felt as though her rear had been split into four pieces... Their arms were slashed by branches and scraped by rocks, and they never even noticed. At last they reached the foot of the mountain, and only then did they breathe a sigh of relief, as though they had just finished some great task, and exchanged a smile.

Both of them were worried about the same man, yet neither felt jealousy or rivalry; it was as if their hearts had drawn closer to each other...

Luckily, before Wei Zhao had gone up the mountain, he had not pulled the car key from the ignition. He had left it there as a precaution, so that he could make a quick getaway — and down here at the foot of the mountain, no one was likely to steal the car anyway.

Now it worked in Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu's favor; otherwise, with the key on Wei Zhao's person, it would probably have been blown to bits.

Carefully, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu laid Wei Zhao on the back seat of the Beetle, then the two of them sped off toward home.

They did not go to the hospital; they went straight home, because they knew that after being injured Wei Zhao never went to a hospital — he simply healed on his own. And this time, too, before losing consciousness, Wei Zhao had not asked them to take him to a hospital.

Gu Pengzhan paced anxiously around the villa. He called Wei Zhao, and the line said the phone was off; he called his daughter and Xiaoshu, and again, both were off. The kidnappers could not be reached either. He had no idea how Wei Zhao, his daughter, and Xiaoshu were faring.

Had Wei Zhao found his daughter and Xiaoshu? Had the kidnappers kept their word and let them all go? And why was Wei Zhao's phone off as well?

Uncle Qing was injured, so Gu Pengzhan had not a single person to talk things over with. He could not call the police either. All he could do was wait anxiously in the villa for Wei Zhao to return.

"Beep, beep..."

Suddenly the sound of a car came from outside the villa. Gu Pengzhan started, and hurried out in a few quick strides — only to see Shen Yushu's yellow Beetle pulling in!

"Xiaoyi!" Gu Pengzhan called out instinctively. But once the words were out, he saw that the person in the driver's seat was not Wei Zhao, but his daughter, Gu Mengyao!

"Daddy..." Gu Mengyao had been gritting her teeth the whole way. Her knees hurt so badly she could barely press the gas pedal, but she had held on. She had to hold on! Wei Zhao had fallen; it was up to her to shoulder the responsibility of being the elder sister.

Xiaoshu, by contrast, was in an even sorrier state. Gu Mengyao had landed on her knees; Shen Yushu had landed on her backside. She did not dare even sit on the seat, and had lain on her side the entire way, utterly miserable.

But now, at the sight of Gu Pengzhan, Gu Mengyao could hold on no longer. Tears burst from her eyes — tears of grievance, of pain, and above all of worry for Wei Zhao. Still, thank goodness, they had made it home safely, and Wei Zhao was not dead.

Gu Mengyao got out of the car and could hardly stand. She did not know how she had managed the whole way without an accident. She threw herself into Gu Pengzhan's arms. "Daddy, I was so scared..."

"There, there, it's all right now that you're back!" Gu Pengzhan was greatly relieved to see his daughter. But he did not see Wei Zhao, which struck him as odd. "Yaoyao, where's Xiaoyi?"

"In the back of the car. He's hurt — hurt saving me and Xiaoshu!" Gu Mengyao wept bitterly. "Daddy, Wei Zhao nearly died just now. Do you know that? To save us, he didn't care whether he lived or died..."

Gu Pengzhan was startled. "Then what are you doing home? Why didn't you take him to the hospital?"

"Brother Arrowbrand always nurses his own injuries. He didn't tell us to take him to a hospital..." Shen Yushu got out of the car clutching her backside as she explained.

"I see..." Gu Pengzhan thought back to when Uncle Qing had been injured — hadn't the hospital doctors been helpless too? It seemed Wei Zhao had his own ways. Gu Pengzhan said no more. He opened the car door, gathered Wei Zhao up in his own arms, and carried him into the villa.

Wei Zhao was laid on the bed in his own room. Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had changed into pajamas and come down. One girl had a bruised backside, the other a purple-black knee; one dared not stand, the other dared not sit. Yet both of them kept watch at Wei Zhao's bedside...

Gu Pengzhan sighed. These two children had never known hardship growing up, and now, with only a little medicinal oil dabbed on their hurts and no rest at all, they were gritting their teeth and keeping Wei Zhao company!

It filled Gu Pengzhan with a warm sense of comfort. They had, without anyone noticing, finally grown up. They were no longer carefree little girls.

"Are you sure we don't need to take Xiaoyi to the hospital?" Gu Pengzhan asked, still a little worried, even though Wei Zhao's color had clearly improved.

"I don't think so... The hospital probably couldn't do anything about his injuries anyway..." Gu Mengyao shook her head. She firmly believed that Wei Zhao had his own way of healing himself, even though at this moment he looked as if he were merely asleep.

Gu Pengzhan nodded. "I'll go to the company and the police station first to deal with the aftermath. You two stay home with Xiaoyi, and don't go out on your own!"

The villa district had twenty-four-hour surveillance, so the kidnappers could not brazenly come here to kill. Besides, they had no idea how badly Wei Zhao was hurt, and they had troubles enough of their own just now. There was no need to worry about Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu's safety.

As for Uncle Qing's injuries, there was nothing to be done but wait until Wei Zhao woke up and then go save Uncle Qing. There was no other way.

After Gu Pengzhan left, Gu Mengyao hesitated a moment, then said to Shen Yushu, "Xiaoshu, shouldn't we tell Tang Yun about Wei Zhao's injuries?"

"Tell her? So she can come make trouble? If she knew Brother Arrowbrand got hurt because of the two of us, she'd blow her top!" Shen Yushu shook her head.

"But it doesn't seem right not to tell her, does it? She's Wei Zhao's girlfriend — surely she has a right to know?" Gu Mengyao was still hesitant.
