Chapter 913 — Her Heart

The Blossom Guardian

Yet Wei Zhao's single blow had missed! What did that show? Either he was now weaker than an ordinary man, or the man before him was no ordinary hand either!

Wei Zhao knew his own condition perfectly well, which left only the latter possibility: the other party was also a skilled hand. Not skilled in the sense of a cultivator, but one of those fighters who stood far above the common run of men.

But if he was no common street thug, why had he appeared here? And was it not obvious that he had deliberately come to pick a quarrel with Wei Zhao?

"Apologize!" The bald man stared at Wei Zhao coldly. "I'm giving you three seconds to think it over. Either you kneel down and kowtow to me, or I'll have my men beat you until you kneel!"

Wei Zhao drew a deep breath. Premeditated! Those men had definitely come with premeditation, for everything had fallen into place far too neatly — as if it had all been staged, catching Wei Zhao completely off guard.

Were they sent by Zhen Yingjun to test whether he was hurt?

Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. It seemed that sometimes appearances alone were not enough to fool others. When people harbored doubts about you, they would use their own methods to probe you one after another — and by the look of things, that was exactly what was happening now.

For a moment, Wei Zhao found himself trapped between advancing and retreating. If he swallowed the insult, the other side would certainly learn that his strength had not recovered. Even that one move just now had been enough for any sharp-eyed man to see that he no longer had his former power — otherwise, how could the bald man have dodged?

If he did not swallow it, the other side would still learn the truth about his strength. But by now there was no need to endure any longer — his strength was doomed to be exposed either way, so there was no reason for Wei Zhao to keep hiding it.

"Then we'll just have to see who ends up kneeling." With that, Wei Zhao moved, appearing behind the bald man like a specter. A sharp blade-hand came down, the bald man howled, and in an instant he was on his knees...

These were assassination arts Wei Zhao reserved for saving his own life, and the step just now was a lightness skill he almost never used — a card held in reserve for times when he had no other choice.

"Damn it, brothers, get him! He dared to hit Brother Bald — let's cripple him!" Several of the bald man's underlings bellowed as they surrounded Wei Zhao.

"Can't you see how things stand? Your leader is already on his knees. A few seconds ago, he was the one wanting me on mine." Wei Zhao looked at the bald man's underlings. "Move your vehicle out of the way. I have no wish to make a fuss over you."

His strength was already exposed, so the only thing Wei Zhao could do now was talk to Gu Pengzhan as quickly as possible and get him to find a replacement personal guard. If he stayed in Songshan City any longer, he would bring a great deal of trouble down on Gu Pengzhan!

Of course, he hoped these thugs were not Zhen Yingjun's people, and that it was all merely coincidence.

"This isn't about whether you care to settle accounts. You've laid hands on our leader, so you're staying put." One of the bald man's underlings pointed at Wei Zhao. "Otherwise, from now on we won't have the face to go on running these streets!"

"Fine." Wei Zhao had no choice. His strength was bound to be exposed sooner or later, and the ghostly lightness skill and the blade-hand just now could at least work to confuse the enemy, making it hard for them to see through his true power.

The speed of that ghostly lightness skill was not something an ordinary non-cultivator could attain — but Wei Zhao's version of the art was an exception. As for the blade-hand, it was only the plainest of fighting moves, yet it had contained not a trace of true qi.

That way, though the enemy might harbor doubts about the blade-hand, the fear of the ghostly lightness skill he had shown before would prevent them from drawing any hasty conclusions about his real strength; and while they wrestled with their own suspicions, Wei Zhao would gain precious time!

But now, facing so many at once, Wei Zhao could no longer maintain the illusion. He could put these men down, but only by relying on fighting technique rather than true strength — a thing that, he knew, could never pass unnoticed by those with discerning eyes.

Half a minute later, the bald man's underlings, like the bald man himself, were all on their knees, groaning in pain. Wei Zhao had not done much to them — merely broken an arm here, a leg there, a rib or two. It was only what they deserved.

Wei Zhao retrieved the car keys from the bald man's grasp, moved the Nissan van out of the way, then went back to his own car and drove off.

During all this, not a single security guard had appeared — yet another sign that something was not right. Wei Zhao had to prepare his countermeasures as early as possible.

"Whew..." Tang Yun, watching Wei Zhao get back into the car unscathed, finally let out a sigh of relief. "I thought you said your strength was all gone? You scared me half to death just now!"

"Even without my strength, I'm still a cut above an ordinary man." Wei Zhao smiled. Fearing that Tang Yun would worry, he did not voice his suspicions.

"Those men are truly hateful!" Tang Yun had no idea that this was a premeditated provocation. "Where are we going now?"

Tang Yun had felt no sense of danger descending. She was still basking in happiness, looking forward to the beautiful days ahead, the good life she would share with Wei Zhao.

The man at the plow, the woman at the loom — hand in hand, growing old together.

"Let me take you back to the hospital. There are a few things I need to settle before I go, so I may not have time to see you for the next day or two," Wei Zhao said.

"Oh..." Tang Yun felt a little disappointed, but she did not say so. Wei Zhao had his own affairs to attend to, and Tang Yun was sensible enough not to cling to him.

Wei Zhao stopped the car in front of the hospital. In the passenger seat, Tang Yun was reluctant to leave; she held Wei Zhao's hand. After this parting, who knew when they would meet again... Tang Yun could not bear to let go.

Wei Zhao was her first love, and the choice she had made firmly for the rest of her life. Brief as their time together had been, it was indelibly etched in her heart.

"Then... I'm going. Take care!" Tang Yun knew this was not the moment for lingering tenderness. Though she could hardly bear the thought of separation, she let go of Wei Zhao's hand and prepared to get out.

"Mm. I'll be waiting for you to come to me." Wei Zhao smiled.

"Mm..." Tang Yun opened the door and got out, but then she turned around, leaned back into the car, and quickly pressed a kiss to Wei Zhao's cheek before running off, her face burning red...

With her actions, Tang Yun had already proven where her heart lay.

Tang Yun was a conservative girl. To take the initiative and kiss Wei Zhao like that meant that, in her own heart, she already considered herself his woman...

"Heh..." Wei Zhao touched the spot where Tang Yun had kissed him and could not help but smile. This was a girl worth cherishing for a lifetime, wasn't she?

Only when Tang Yun's figure had finally vanished from his sight did Wei Zhao, with a wistful ache of loss in his heart, start the car, turn the wheel, and drive away from the First People's Hospital.
