Chapter 1010 — The Feeling of Being in Love
"Not tonight. It's late — go up and get some rest," Wei Zhao said. "Isn't your father back? It wouldn't be right for me to go up."
"He didn't come home. He's staying at a hotel — seems he has some other assignment and has to go out tonight; he was afraid of disturbing my rest." Feng Xiaoxiao shook her head. Her father's work kept him busy, and she had long since grown used to living alone.
"I see... Then I won't go up either. See you tomorrow." Wei Zhao smiled.
"Oh... all right." Feng Xiaoxiao sounded a little disappointed. "Then... could you kiss me?"
Feng Xiaoxiao suddenly lifted her head and looked at Wei Zhao. Her bright eyes shone in the night like stars, and Wei Zhao's heart stirred — he felt an urge to taste her lips. But he restrained himself well enough. Wasn't he and Feng Xiaoxiao moving a little too fast?
"Go on up. Get some sleep." Wei Zhao did not take up her request.
"Oh..." Feng Xiaoxiao was disappointed. She was dying to know what kissing someone felt like; she had never had that experience. In the past, the very thought of getting close to a boy had made her feel sick, but with Wei Zhao, she found herself looking forward to it.
"I'm off," Wei Zhao said to her. "Hurry upstairs!"
"Okay." Feng Xiaoxiao hesitated, then — she did not know where the impulse came from — suddenly rose on tiptoe and planted a light kiss on Wei Zhao's cheek. Before he could say a word, she skipped away giggling. Afraid he might be angry, she only waved at him: "Heh heh, I'm going! That felt pretty good!"
With that, Feng Xiaoxiao ran quickly toward the entrance of the building.
Wei Zhao smiled, watching her fleeing figure, and touched his cheek. That fleeting sensation had been quite nice indeed. He felt an urge to run after her and hold her. He knew that if he wanted to go further with Feng Xiaoxiao, a girl of her temperament would certainly not refuse him. She was different from Tang Yun: Tang Yun was reserved and demure, while Feng Xiaoxiao was passionate and fiery. He had touched her breast back in Yanjing, and she had not shown much resistance — that alone told him as much.
But Wei Zhao did not do it. That momentary impulse was only an impulse, not the kind of love that rises from the depths of the heart. True, he had come to like Feng Xiaoxiao somewhat, but he did not want the two of them to do anything too soon.
Only after watching Feng Xiaoxiao go upstairs did Wei Zhao return to his car and drive away.
Feng Xiaoxiao ran into the elevator in one breath. Inside, she clutched her chest, gasping, her face red as a boiled lobster. Bold as she was, this was the first time she had ever taken the initiative to kiss a boy — even if it was only his cheek, it was enough to make her blush with shame.
Yet that electric-shock of a feeling fascinated her. No wonder so many young men and women were so keen on falling in love — this feeling really was wonderful.
Feng Xiaoxiao touched her burning cheeks. What did it feel like to be kissed? Kissing Wei Zhao herself had already felt so good; if Wei Zhao kissed her, would it feel like happiness itself?
In a daze, the elevator reached the top floor. Feng Xiaoxiao got out and walked to her own door.
Her home was not one of those luxurious villas, but a large duplex in a building with two elevators and only one apartment per floor. Even if it had been bought years ago, a place like this in Songshan City would have cost several million.
Feng Tianlong simply had few occasions to spend money, and knowing his daughter did not have long to live, he had never thought of saving. As a rule he did everything he could to give his daughter the best possible living environment.
Feng Xiaoxiao opened the door and went in, heading straight for the bathroom, where she washed her burning face with cold water. She badly needed to cool down.
"Phew..." After washing her face, Feng Xiaoxiao let out a breath of relief. Looking at her pretty face in the mirror, she clenched her fist and told herself: "Xiaoxiao, you're the best. Come on, come on! Wei Zhao has already started to like you..."
But after cheering herself on, Feng Xiaoxiao sank once more into that strange emotion. Was this what being in love felt like? Had she... really fallen for Wei Zhao? Mm... it did not matter. She was going to die anyway; she was only tasting what love felt like. The more she threw herself into it, the better it would feel.
Thinking this, Feng Xiaoxiao decided not to deliberately hold her feelings back.
Out of the bathroom, Feng Xiaoxiao sent Wei Zhao a text message: "Darling, I'm home."
By the time Feng Xiaoxiao's message arrived, Wei Zhao was almost home. He had been a little worried about why she had not texted him for so long; now he was relieved.
Wei Zhao casually texted back: "I'm almost there too."
Not long after he sent the reply, the phone rang. Wei Zhao assumed it was Feng Xiaoxiao calling, and since he was driving, he did not check the caller ID — he simply answered: "Xiaoxiao, what is it?"
"Xiaoxiao, is it? You make it sound so sweet. I'm not Xiaoxiao, I'm Yunyun!" Tang Yun's voice sounded as if she were angry, but when she said the word "Yunyun," she could not help laughing at herself. "Calling myself Yunyun — that really is awkward..."
"Heh, I had just gotten a text from Xiaoxiao, and then your call came in — I thought it was her." Wei Zhao knew Tang Yun would not be jealous. She was a girl of an extremely kind heart; after learning of Feng Xiaoxiao's tragic circumstances, all that remained in her was sympathy and pity. Otherwise she would not have agreed so readily to Feng Tianlong's request today.
"I just wanted to ask — are you home yet? I was a little worried..." Tang Yun was not worried about Wei Zhao driving alone so late; she was worried about those forces that had made trouble for Wei Zhao before. Wei Zhao had taught them a lesson, but who knew whether they had truly given up? Might they not be waiting for a chance at revenge?
"I'll be home in a moment," Wei Zhao said. "By the way, with Xiaoxiao there earlier, I never got the chance to ask you — what exactly did you and Xiaoxiao say? What agreement did you reach? How is it that she's being the little wife and yet looks like she's the one who got the better deal?"
"Heh heh!" Tang Yun could not help laughing at his question. "I knew you'd be curious! But it really was rather amusing. Here's how it went: you had gone to buy food, and while Xiaoxiao and I waited for you, we got to talking about that 'other woman' business from before..."
