Chapter 1054 — Utterly Depressed
Martial artists have their rules, the mundane world has its own — every sphere lives by something different. Sun Jingyan truly could not imagine it: Wei Zhao, so young, with three wives and four concubines? And from Feng Xiaoxiao one could see that she and the first wife got along quite well, and that she had no objection to Wei Zhao taking yet another lover!
If that were so, then only two explanations were possible.
One: these women were all fools, unable to find boyfriends, and willing to share one man. But the probability of that was zero. How outstanding was Feng Xiaoxiao? A girl this beautiful — to call her one in ten thousand would not be an exaggeration. And judging by Feng Xiaoxiao, the first wife could not be much worse. Would a girl of such quality need to share a man with another woman?
Sun Jingyan frowned inwardly. Her curiosity about Wei Zhao grew stronger and stronger — this man seemed to be full of secrets.
"Jingyan, you came out of a great clan yourself — how can you be another man's mistress?" Wu Chengtian's heart was bleeding; he was about to choke on his own fury. Sun Jingyan would rather be the mistress of some worthless nobody than marry him properly, with a matchmaker and a bridal sedan? Why, why! Was he really so inferior? Yet outwardly he still had to put on the airs of an elder brother and lecture her with righteous gravity: "Brother Wei Zhao is outstanding, to be sure, but too many wives will ruin the harmony of a household! And Jingyan, think about it — if you become another man's mistress, once Grandpa Sun hears of it, won't it kill him with rage?"
"Is that so? Is being a mistress so unacceptable? As I recall, Grandpa Wu seems to have several wives himself," Sun Jingyan said, unconcerned.
"Uh..." Wu Chengtian was taken aback, and said with a bitter look, "Isn't that a different situation? Our Wu family is a great clan too, and great clans aren't bound by the rules of the mundane world — naturally we may take more wives! And the crucial thing is, my grandfather is a man of great authority; those wives wouldn't dare scheme against one another, and before my grandmother they are all most respectful!"
"Oh. I came out of a great clan as well, so I'm not bound either," Sun Jingyan said mildly.
"That..." Wu Chengtian's expression turned rather ugly. He had not expected Sun Jingyan to be so stubborn and deaf to advice. He had told her plainly: Wei Zhao was only an ordinary man, he could not possibly manage so many wives, and sooner or later there would be quarrels!
But with Wei Zhao right there, he could not say outright that Wei Zhao was useless. If he did, he might offend Wei Zhao too, and then Wei Zhao would take Feng Xiaoxiao and leave, and the scene would turn awkward. And if Sun Jingyan went off with Wei Zhao as well, that would be even worse.
Just then the waiter brought the dishes in, so Wu Chengtian could only shut his mouth for the moment and brood over his next move, thoroughly depressed.
How on earth was he to turn Sun Jingyan's thinking around?
Damn it all — and Feng Xiaoxiao too, not a trace of jealousy in her! And Sun Jingyan was even more addled, volunteering to be Wei Zhao's mistress! What was so good about this Wei Zhao? Wu Chengtian looked him up and down and could not find a single merit in him.
If Sun Jingyan had not been present, Wu Chengtian would truly have liked to slap Wei Zhao dead with one palm, just to spare himself the sight of him.
When the food arrived, Feng Xiaoxiao threw all caution to the wind and ate with abandon, sweeping the delicacies off the table with a clatter and a slurp. She did not care in the least what others thought of her — she had not long to live anyway, and so long as Wei Zhao did not find her distasteful, nothing else mattered.
But Wei Zhao had brought Feng Xiaoxiao here precisely to eat, and eating was the whole point. Not only did he serve her food himself, he kept urging her to eat more. And so Feng Xiaoxiao ate very happily indeed.
Sun Jingyan, by contrast, ate little — daintily, a few bites and she was full. Wu Chengtian did not touch a single mouthful. He was too depressed to eat; how could food go down? The situation was far from what he had expected.
As for having Feng Xiaoxiao play along and put on airs, Wu Chengtian had given that up for the time being. Sun Jingyan's heart was not on him at all now; no amount of showing off would do any good.
What was he to do? Wu Chengtian's brows knit tight. In the present circumstances, the most important thing was Feng Xiaoxiao's attitude. If Feng Xiaoxiao strongly rejected Sun Jingyan, or urged Wei Zhao to draw a clear line between himself and Sun Jingyan, then he still had room to maneuver. Otherwise, he had no hope at all.
Another tactic was to telephone Sun Jingyan's family and tell the Suns that Sun Jingyan was being another man's mistress. But that method could not be used unless absolutely necessary — for if Sun Jingyan learned the truth, she would loathe him all the more, and tattling behind someone's back was a thing greatly to be avoided.
That meal brought joy to some and gloom to others. Feng Xiaoxiao ate happily; Wu Chengtian was thoroughly depressed; and Wei Zhao and Sun Jingyan were there to watch the comedy.
Originally, before coming, Wu Chengtian had prepared several little scenes with which to show off, but he had not used a single one, and now he had no heart for them. Even with Feng Xiaoxiao's cooperation, there would be no point in putting on a show — Sun Jingyan's thoughts were not on him at this moment.
The meal ended in haste. Wu Chengtian gloomily flagged down a taxi and left, while Sun Jingyan drove Feng Xiaoxiao and Wei Zhao back to school.
The moment they got in the car, Sun Jingyan could not help covering her mouth and laughing. She gave Feng Xiaoxiao a thumbs-up: "Xiaoxiao, your talent for fleecing people is really something. In one morning, Wu Chengtian lost ten million!"
"Heh heh heh!" Feng Xiaoxiao laughed, not without pride. In the art of fleecing people she had considerable confidence — though a sucker like Wu Chengtian was rather rare.
"Xiaoxiao, come sit in the front, let's talk?" Sun Jingyan had grown ever more curious about Wei Zhao, but she knew his temperament was somewhat aloof, and that questioning him directly might yield nothing. Feng Xiaoxiao, however, seemed quite talkative, so Sun Jingyan decided to fish for information about Wei Zhao from her.
