Chapter 1073 — Feng Xiaoxiao's Regret

The Blossom Guardian

"Heh..." The speaker had meant nothing by it, but the listener had taken it to heart. Wei Zhao knew Feng Xiaoxiao was telling the truth; he simply did not know what to say, and could only manage: "When there's a chance later on, we'll have another race. Though it won't be anytime soon."

"Right, we made a scene today. A lot of people know who we are now." Feng Xiaoxiao was clever; the moment Wei Zhao spoke, she understood his reasoning.

The price gap between the Land Rover Discovery 4 and the Audi was not all that large—only about double. But if one drove it around the city, it would guzzle fuel. So all things considered, Wei Zhao did not feel this deal was particularly worthwhile.

Of course, as long as Feng Xiaoxiao was happy, it hardly mattered. It was just that license plate, 2b941, that was truly a bit awkward. Wei Zhao had no desire to flaunt such a plate driving around town; he could ask Song Xiaoniu'er to swap it out.

After descending the winding mountain road, Wei Zhao caught sight of Qiu Lingshan. But he did not greet her—he simply drove straight away from the scene. For the time being, Wei Zhao did not want to show his face here.

"It's getting late. Shall we head home?" Wei Zhao asked as he drove.

"Mm..." Feng Xiaoxiao nodded. Everything that had happened today, thrilling and exhilarating as it was, had left her body and mind truly exhausted. She too wanted to rest early.

Wei Zhao first drove the Land Rover to the 4S dealership, then took a taxi to the residential compound where Feng Xiaoxiao lived. From there, he drove out the Beetle that had been parked in the compound earlier.

On the way, Wei Zhao called Tang Yun.

"Yunyun, where are you?" Wei Zhao asked.

"I'm already back at the hospital. Are you and Xiaoxiao done with the race?" Tang Yun asked.

"Mm, it's over. I've already taken Xiaoxiao home." Wei Zhao did not want Tang Yun to worry, so he said nothing about what had happened earlier. Instead he asked: "How did you get back?"

"Gu Mengyao came to find me. We went together," Tang Yun said.

Heh. Wei Zhao found it somewhat curious—it seemed that because of Feng Xiaoxiao's situation, the eldest young lady and Shen Yushu had, with remarkable unanimity, formed an alliance with Tang Yun, clearing the way for everything concerning Feng Xiaoxiao.

After finishing the call with Tang Yun, Wei Zhao drove straight back to the villa.

As usual, the eldest young lady and Shen Yushu were sitting in the living room watching television. When they saw Wei Zhao return, they merely glanced up before continuing to watch.

In the past, whenever Wei Zhao came home late, the eldest young lady and Little Shu would more or less express their displeasure. But now, because of Feng Xiaoxiao's situation, they had simultaneously adopted an attitude of tolerance.

Wei Zhao thought that the eldest young lady and Little Shu were, at heart, still very kind—not in the least bit arrogant or miserly the way so many daughters of wealthy families were.

So much had happened today, and Wei Zhao was covered in dust and grime. After returning to his room, he quickly took a hot shower and calmed his mind.

Today's events had not been aimed at him, but at Feng Xiaoxiao. That had caught Wei Zhao somewhat by surprise. Still, the bald man in sunglasses was clearly an ordinary person, far beneath Wei Zhao's level, and thus not worth worrying about. This sort of matter was better left for Feng Tianlong to fret over.

Before long, Wei Zhao's phone rang. He picked it up and saw that it was Qiu Lingshan calling.

"Hello?" Wei Zhao answered.

"Wei Zhao, what happened today—was that your doing?" Qiu Lingshan asked, coming straight to the point.

"Are you here to interrogate me?" Wei Zhao frowned.

"Of course not..." Qiu Lingshan sensed the displeasure in his tone and her heart immediately tightened. She hurriedly said: "Wei Zhao, don't be angry. This silly little girl was just worried about you..."

Qiu Lingshan's earlier tone had carried a hint of discontent because Wei Zhao had clearly been at the scene yet never showed himself, which left her feeling somewhat regretful—as though he were deliberately avoiding her. That was why she had called, feeling wronged, wanting to ask.

But the moment she asked her first question, Wei Zhao grew unhappy, and Qiu Lingshan could only change her tune, feeling even more aggrieved. She feared that if Wei Zhao got upset, he might simply stand her up tomorrow.

"Today's matter—it wasn't appropriate for me to show myself," Wei Zhao explained mildly.

Qiu Lingshan was briefly taken aback, then understood his meaning. Wei Zhao had always been a low-key person. He had done so many things before, yet in the end had given all the credit to her—which said everything.

"Mm, you're all right, aren't you? We couldn't intervene in today's matter, and we don't know the inside story," Qiu Lingshan said, relieved to see that Wei Zhao was not angry.

"I'm fine." Wei Zhao shook his head. "You called me just for this?"

"Not exactly. I just wanted to ask—can you come find me tomorrow?" Qiu Lingshan asked.

"Find you?" Wei Zhao was startled.

"Mm... to help me... boost my strength..." Qiu Lingshan was both embarrassed and indignant. Wei Zhao had actually forgotten about this? Honestly! How could she matter so little in his eyes? It seemed this silly little girl still needed to keep working at it!

"Oh, that..." Wei Zhao did recall now—he had promised Qiu Lingshan that he would go to her home over the weekend to help her boost her strength. These past few days he had been so focused on taking Feng Xiaoxiao racing that he had pushed this matter to the back of his mind. Feeling somewhat apologetic, he said: "I'll come find you tomorrow. At the police station?"

"Come to my home..." Qiu Lingshan said after a moment's hesitation. She felt that for this sort of thing, it was more comfortable at home. In the office, it always felt a bit awkward.

"Where's your home?" Wei Zhao did not decline.

"How about this—come find me at the police station tomorrow morning. I'll be staying in the office tonight, and then I'll take you to my home," Qiu Lingshan said after thinking it over.

"All right." Wei Zhao agreed readily.

Feng Xiaoxiao was conflicted—deeply, utterly conflicted!

She had discovered that she had truly fallen in love with Wei Zhao, and not just a little—she loved him deeply! This should have been a good thing, for it would let her experience the taste of a passionate love before she died. The deeper the feelings, the better.

And now, Wei Zhao was coming to care for her more and more—something Feng Xiaoxiao had once desperately wished for! Because only then, at the moment of her death, would Wei Zhao grieve all the more, and her purpose of revenge would be achieved!

But now, Feng Xiaoxiao felt a twinge of regret! As she fell deeply in love with Wei Zhao, she also came to care more and more about his feelings. She did not want her death to bring him pain and burden—that would be a terrible thing to do. If she died, how much would Wei Zhao grieve?
