Chapter 1087 — Let's Travel Together

The Blossom Guardian

This was a task Xie Yufeng took a great liking to!

Old Master Song, Song Xiangwen, wanting to give his granddaughter a surprise, had not breathed a word of the arranged marriage to her; in Song Xiangwen's view, the girl would be overjoyed once she heard the news. After all, what Qiu Lingshan longed for was a man even more formidable than herself — and such a man, in Song Xiangwen's eyes, could be none other than a son of the Yu family.

The heirs of other great houses could not possibly possess such formidable strength!

Wei Zhao had no idea that Qiu Lingshan's jubilant phone call home with the good news would bring about so much unnecessary trouble. By the time he stepped out of Qiu Lingshan's apartment, the night had grown late, and the evening breeze cleared his head considerably.

Qiu Lingshan's seduction had very nearly cost Wei Zhao his self-control. Since immersing himself in this easygoing life, Wei Zhao had found his state of mind shifting — no longer cold and ruthless as before, no longer possessed of a heart of iron.

He was easier to move now, quicker to be stirred. And though life seemed to have grown colorful and varied, Wei Zhao truly could not tell whether this was a good thing or a bad one.

He got into the car and drove toward home, yet along the way his thoughts kept circling one very important question.

For the present, Wei Zhao's greatest weakness was that he had too few helpers. Of the capable fighters at his side, the strongest was he himself. Wei Zhao very much wished to raise Uncle Qing, General Weiwu, and Qiu Lingshan to higher tiers — but he was powerless to do so.

The energy within the jade pendant space was inexhaustible, yet when it was transmitted through himself as the medium, a bottleneck inevitably arose. That bottleneck stemmed from the limits of his own strength. He stood at the Profound rank, so at most he could raise another person's strength to the very apex — the grand consummation — of the late Yellow rank, and not a hair's breadth beyond.

So if he wanted others to grow stronger, Wei Zhao could only grow stronger first. Only upon breaking through to the Earth rank could he raise the people around him to the Profound rank. Yet this left him with the nagging feeling of a chicken's rib — little worth the gnawing, and impossible to throw away.

He himself was already an Earth-rank fighter; to have only Profound-rank fighters at his side as helpers was, frankly, something of a letdown.

If only others could draw directly upon the energy of the jade pendant space! But even if they could, Wei Zhao had no wish to let anyone know his secret. That secret was his ultimate trump card for survival, and the only ones he could share it with were those closest to his heart.

If Tang Yun were also a cultivator, Wei Zhao could share this secret with her without a moment's hesitation. He already knew full well how Tang Yun felt toward him: she was a girl who would neither leave him nor abandon him, who had even once planned to drop out of school and follow him back to his hometown to farm.

As for anyone else, Wei Zhao could not yet bring himself to trust them that far. And even if he did trust them, he would still have no way to let them absorb the jade pendant space's energy directly.

If only the energy of the jade pendant space could be released and transferred outward without loss, everything would be simple. But that was something Wei Zhao could only dream about.

When he returned to the villa, the moment Wei Zhao stepped through the door he saw Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu sitting around the coffee table, leafing through a great pile of posters. For once, the two of them were not watching television.

At sight of Wei Zhao's return, the young lady merely nodded, betraying neither pleasure nor displeasure. Wei Zhao was long used to it — that was simply her detached temperament.

Shen Yushu, however, cried out with barely contained impatience: "Brother Arrow, why are you only just back? Come help Sister Yaoyao and me figure out where we should go!"

"Where should we go?" Wei Zhao started slightly, walked over to the sofa beside Shen Yushu and sat down, asking with some puzzlement, "Go do what?"

"The May Day holiday is a long one — Sister Yaoyao and I are planning a trip out. Brother Arrow, where do you think we should go?" As she explained, Shen Yushu pointed at the heap of travel-agency and scenic-spot brochures covering the coffee table. "Sister Yaoyao and I are both completely dazzled by it all. Come take a look for us?"

"The May Day holiday?" Only then did Wei Zhao suddenly remember that May Day was International Labor Day — a statutory holiday.

So he had already become one of the ranks of ordinary people. The Wei Zhao of old had no holidays: when a mission came, whatever the hour, he threw himself into the work; and when there was no mission, every day was a holiday!

Wei Zhao's notion of holidays had therefore always been vague. Only now, with Shen Yushu saying it like this, did he realize that in his present identity as a student he was naturally entitled to days off as well.

"That's right!" Shen Yushu nodded and thrust the whole pile of posters into Wei Zhao's hands.

"Where do the two of you want to go?" Wei Zhao did not so much as glance at the pile, setting it aside instead. "The advertising on these is all somewhat exaggerated — reading them or not makes very little difference. Besides, my pharmaceutical company opens on May Day, and I can't leave. Why don't the two of you go?"

"Then we'll go on the second of May — we've got several days off anyway," Shen Yushu said airily. "Right, Sister Yaoyao?"

"Mm... Wei Zhao, what I mean is, we should invite Tang Yun and Feng Xiaoxiao to come along." Gu Mengyao nodded and lifted her head to look at him.

The young lady's words took Wei Zhao by surprise — he had not expected her to invite Tang Yun and Feng Xiaoxiao of her own accord. Still, come to think of it, the young lady had always been most reasonable, so that she should make such a decision did not surprise him. What struck him as odd was only that she had said it herself rather than speaking through Shen Yushu.

"That works, too. But I saw on Xiaoxiao's phone that her wish is to watch the sunrise by the sea — why don't we take a road trip down to the coast instead of tagging along with a tour group?" Wei Zhao recalled Feng Xiaoxiao's wish to watch the sunrise and eat a fried egg, and merely thinking of it left him both baffled and amused. He could not for the life of him see what watching the sunrise had to do with eating a fried egg — how had Feng Xiaoxiao managed to link those two things together?

"That's fine." Gu Mengyao did not object, only saying, "Then you arrange it."

"Oh, wonderful — I get to go catch sharks and eat them again!" Shen Yushu clapped her hands in delight. As for going to the seaside, she was all for it.

"Heh..." Wei Zhao shrugged, and the matter was settled. He headed for his room to take a shower.
