Chapter 1226 — Brother-in-Law
"Huh? Don't tell me you've got someone else in mind, Sis? And he's formidable too — quite a fighter?" Song Lingrui and Qiu Lingshan had been close since they were small, two hearts that beat as one. So the moment Qiu Lingshan opened her mouth, Song Lingrui grew suspicious.
"Mm..." Qiu Lingshan didn't deny it. This was something she couldn't tell Grandfather yet, but she could tell her little sister — and Little Rui kept her mouth shut tight; she wouldn't let it slip.
"Hehe, I knew it!" Song Lingrui said, a little excited. "Come on, tell me about my brother-in-law — how formidable is he? Is he as formidable as that Xie Yufeng?"
"Far more formidable than him!" At the thought of Wei Zhao, Qiu Lingshan's heart brimmed with sweetness. "What is Yufeng worth? He's got some strength, but who knows how many miracle pills it took to pile it up. A spoiled young gentleman from head to toe, silly and empty-headed, without a shred of backbone!"
"But when did the younger generation come to have so many formidable fighters? I may not be in the country, but as far as I know, among the clan children the only one who's broken through to the Profound Rank is the Yu family's, isn't it?" Here Song Lingrui's tone suddenly caught. "Wow, Sis — my brother-in-law isn't from one of the hidden families, is he?"
"He shouldn't be. He isn't from a clan family either." Turning over what she knew of Wei Zhao, Qiu Lingshan rejected Song Lingrui's guess. Wei Zhao was not from a clan family, and surely not from a hidden family either; Qiu Lingshan had never once heard of someone from a hidden family coming out to serve as a bodyguard to a girl of the mundane world.
"Cultivated it all by himself? A Profound Rank fighter?" Song Lingrui's eyes went wide.
"His origins are a little mysterious. Probably much like yours — he came out of some training camp or other..." Qiu Lingshan frowned. She had known Wei Zhao so long, and yet she didn't even know where he came from.
"Wow, my brother-in-law is that mysterious? Then I absolutely have to meet him! Sis, what's his strength, really?" Song Lingrui grew more curious by the moment.
"That... I'm not very clear either. But the fact that I could advance to the peak of the late Yellow Rank is all thanks to him!" Qiu Lingshan truly did not know Wei Zhao's strength. She had heard that he beat Ma Zhu — an external-school expert at the peak of the mid Profound Rank — half to death, so his strength could hardly be weak...
"What? Your strength was raised by my brother-in-law? Waah, waah, waah! Sis, have you two already dual-cultivated?" Song Lingrui shrieked, thoroughly gossipy. "You two have already done it! Sis, hurry up and tell me — doing that thing with my brother-in-law, is it enjoyable or not? What does it feel like?"
"Cough, cough..." Qiu Lingshan nearly flung the phone away! Flushed red, she coughed twice and said, "Little Rui, what nonsense are you spouting? You're just a child — how is your mind so filthy? What do you mean done it or not? There is absolutely nothing between him and me. Between us it is perfectly innocent!"
Say it she did, but inwardly Qiu Lingshan bore a little grievance: she had offered herself up on a platter, and Wei Zhao still wouldn't take her. The thought of it left her stifled — was she really so unappealing?
"Sis, I'm eighteen already, all right? I'm an adult!" Song Lingrui was rather displeased that her sister still treated her like a child. "Then if you two didn't dual-cultivate, how did you raise your strength?"
"Well... you may not believe it, but he used a method of transmitting energy — he sent his true qi into my body, and I broke through..." Every time Qiu Lingshan recalled it, it struck her as preposterous. Wei Zhao was simply too formidable — he could raise someone's strength even like that?
"What?" Song Lingrui was dumbstruck as well. "He expended his own true qi to raise your strength? Wow, Sis, my brother-in-law loves you so much! I'm so envious — how romantic!"
"It's all right, I suppose..." Qiu Lingshan thought to herself: by your logic, he loves the dog too! But this she could not say — not even to her own sister could she bring herself to say it.
Hearing how lightly Qiu Lingshan spoke of it, Song Lingrui assumed she was doing it on purpose, and her envy deepened. "One day I'll find a boyfriend just like my brother-in-law, one who'll help raise my strength!"
"You're just a child — find what, exactly?" Qiu Lingshan was half amused, half exasperated. "By the way, Little Rui, let's set this aside for now — when are you coming back?"
"I still have to wait a while. Once I get the medal, I can graduate!" Song Lingrui said. "By then I'll have to talk it over with Grandfather — whether to go to work, or come back and attend university. It all depends on Grandfather's arrangements!"
Qiu Lingshan nodded. Song Lingrui was only eighteen, just the right age for university; coming back to take a job would indeed be a bit early. Better that she spend more time at school gaining knowledge and broadening her horizons, so that later she could help Grandfather manage the Song family's affairs, and wait for her little brother to come of age and formally take over the Song family.
"True enough. If you're going to study, then come to Songshan City — that way we sisters can meet often." Qiu Lingshan said.
"Of course! I want to size up my brother-in-law too, and help you screen him while I'm at it. If he can't pass my test — hmph, hmph — then I won't acknowledge him as my brother-in-law!" Song Lingrui said with a chuckle.
"Worry about yourself first! Adults' business — children keep out of it!" Yet inwardly Qiu Lingshan's heart was thumping. Wei Zhao was not her boyfriend at all; if Little Rui said something ill-timed, she would be mortified! So by no means could she let her have a hand in this!
"Let's leave it there — something's come up on my end, I'm hanging up, Sis!" Someone was calling for Song Lingrui over there, so she said a hurried word and made to end the call. "I'll ring you when I have time — I've got plenty of it now!"
Looking at the dead phone, Qiu Lingshan shook her head. The gloom weighing on her before had lifted a good deal. She shook her head again and threw herself back into her tense work.
When Xie Yufeng walked out of the police station, his face was somewhat dark!
Qiu Lingshan didn't like him — even a fool could see that! Xie Yufeng, who within his own family had only to ask and it was given, had never been treated so coldly in his life! Even in other families, once he put forward his standing as heir of the Yu family, those clan heads would show him the utmost favor!
And this Qiu Lingshan had to put on airs! What was so remarkable about her? Just a peak late Yellow Rank fighter who happened to be a little prettier? He himself was at the peak of the mid Profound Rank! And she dared give him a sour face?
Just wait until I marry you — then I'll show you how it's done! Xie Yufeng spat viciously by the roadside.
But no sooner had the spit left his mouth than an old man wearing a public security armband came running over and seized Xie Yufeng by the arm: "Spitting in public — one hundred yuan fine!"
