Chapter 1392 — Impersonating Wei Zhao

The Blossom Guardian

But none of this was what An Jianwen and Dr. Yin cared about. So long as the Fire Wolf Gang cooperated, their plan could proceed without a hitch.

Dr. Yin could carry out his biochemical experiments, and An Jianwen could rake in the money.

The masked man in black called "Zero One" was the experimental subject that An Jianwen and Dr. Yin had built. An Jianwen had given this subject the name "Zero One" — a code name meaning test subject number one. But the name carried another meaning as well: the sounds of "Zero One" were close to those of "Wei Zhao," and so An Jianwen, with wicked intent, had come to treat this "Zero One" as Wei Zhao himself.

And in truth, whether in build or in features, Zero One was the very image of Wei Zhao — a complete replica of the man!

The Fire Wolf Gang was overflowing with talent; a man of Dr. Yin's caliber counted for nothing there. There were plenty of even more formidable doctors of medicine among them, and reshaping a man of roughly Wei Zhao's build into Wei Zhao was a simple enough matter.

Zero One had not only been given plastic surgery; he had also been genetically modified through Dr. Yin's gene-altering injections. For a set period of time he could display a burst of power rivaling that of a peak late-stage Yellow Rank external-school expert. But once the burst passed, he needed several days of recuperation and could not unleash it again — a difficulty Dr. Yin was straining to overcome.

Naturally, this Zero One no longer had a mind of his own. His brain had been reworked by the Fire Wolf Gang's senior hypnotists and brain specialists, turning him into a walking corpse that could only act on command.

These hypnotists and brain experts had carved a whole series of robbery instructions into Zero One's brain, enabling him to complete a robbery in any number of environments, and the loot was sorted according to parameters preset within those instructions.

Thus, apart from Zero One being utterly obedient, he would also never leak a single scrap of information connected to An Jianwen. Once Zero One was arrested, the police would get nothing useful out of him; robbing was all he could do, and nothing else.

He had already been ***, left with no thought of his own. And Big Mule, who went out on missions with him, was merely a scapegoat. In the end, the plan was essentially foolproof: even if something went wrong, it would have nothing whatsoever to do with An Jianwen.

This time, he had not let Zero One show his true face, because that would have been too obvious — and too obvious a frame-up would never achieve the purpose of a frame-up. What An Jianwen wanted was for the police to slowly come to suspect Wei Zhao, and then, at the proper moment, to let Zero One inadvertently show his face. That way, everything would be perfect.

Moreover, An Jianwen was a meticulous man. To achieve an absolutely airtight framing, he had even procured a Land Rover and, taking Wei Zhao's car as his model, replicated every trace of the repairs down to the last detail, even forging a set of license plates — all so that someone would stumble upon it and realize that the culprit was none other than Wei Zhao.

Of course, once the police had locked their sights on Wei Zhao as the suspect, An Jianwen's next step would naturally be to do away with Zero One, wiping Wei Zhao's double clean off the face of the earth. Then Wei Zhao would have no way to argue his case. An Jianwen was certain that even if Wei Zhao somehow escaped conviction, he would still have a layer of skin peeled off him.

Seeing Wei Zhao in trouble delighted An Jianwen. He had always regarded Wei Zhao as a stumbling block; now that he had the chance to toy Wei Zhao to death, how could he not throw himself into it with relish?

Very soon, the take from the robbery was tallied. Big Mule came running over in excitement: "Young Master Wen, the numbers from the robbery are in!"

"How much?" An Jianwen asked. In truth, he had not set his hopes very high; after all, this was only the first trial. Robberies to come would require casing the place beforehand and striking only when there was plenty of cash on hand.

"The bank's cash and foreign currency, plus the cash at the gold shop and the gold and silver jewelry converted over — comes to about thirty million..." Big Mule said.

"That much!" An Jianwen was stunned. He had never expected robbery to be so profitable, and he could not help but laugh out loud. "Very good, very good! Leave the gold and silver jewelry alone, just hand it straight to the Fire Wolf Gang. They have professionals under them who can melt it down into other ornaments before fencing it — no problem at all. The new bills go up the line too; our cut keeps only the old bills!"

"Yes!" Big Mule nodded and went off to handle it. An Jianwen was beaming. His plan really was a good one — a simple, utterly skill-free bit of business with no capital laid out, and he had made it flourish. Gu Mengyao, oh Gu Mengyao, why can't you like me?

At the Songshan City police bureau, Liu Wangli sat in the conference room with a grave face. Qiu Lingshan was away, and the squad's work was temporarily in his hands. What he had never expected was that in the space of a single day, Songshan City had seen two robberies — one at a bank, and one at a jewelry store!

The two had occurred one after the other. Judging by the method and the surveillance footage pulled from the scenes, both cases had been committed by the same man, with an identical modus operandi: that same violently self-willed style, forcing open safes by brute force and plundering them, the whole thing over in an instant. Before the police could even reach the scene, the suspect had already fled.

What was more, the suspect's parking spot had been chosen with real artistry: it avoided the surveillance camera at the bank's entrance, avoided the cameras along the bank's access road, and tucked the car into a blind spot, so that no one could determine which vehicle he had driven.

Still, according to the eyewitnesses, the vehicle the suspect had arrived in was likely a Land Rover; but as for the model and the license plate, the eyewitness had not seen them clearly, and knew nothing about such things anyway.

With Qiu Lingshan away, the pressure on Liu Wangli had risen sharply. His current position was acting deputy captain and captain of the First Squad; with Qiu Lingshan gone, the role of leader naturally fell to him.

Looking over the case file, Liu Wangli was beside himself with anger. This suspect was a little too brazen — daring to commit two crimes in a row. It was as if he held no one in his eyes at all, arrogance beyond measure!

Yet this method of operation also left Liu Wangli shaken. By his judgment, this man might well be a cultivator!
