Chapter 1447 — An Appointment with Guan Xin

The Blossom Guardian

Guan Xin had met Qiu Lingshan again later, when she was kidnapped by the killers sent to murder Liu Bojia, but it had only been a hurried statement and they had never grown close. All she knew was that Qiu Lingshan came from the Song family, was close to Brother Yang Huaijun, and was apparently his junior sister.

"Hello, Officer Song." Much as Guan Xin disliked her, she was a thoughtful girl. Since Qiu Lingshan was standing together with Wei Zhaodian, ignoring her would only embarrass him, so Guan Xin greeted her all the same.

"Guan Xin, right? I remember you." Qiu Lingshan smiled and nodded to her.

Qiu Lingshan no longer had the energy to feel jealous over every pretty woman who appeared beside Wei Zhaodian. There were simply too many to envy. All she hoped for now was that he would pay a little more attention to her.

Born into a great family, she did not fuss much over such things, and that was one reason she could take it in stride.

"Wei Zhaodian, what brings you to the hospital? Are you sick, or are you here to see a friend?" Guan Xin asked.

"To see a friend," Wei Zhaodian said. "How have you been? I have not visited your home for a while. How is Grandpa Guan?"

"Mm... Grandpa is well..." At the mention of her grandfather, a quiet sadness came over Guan Xin. Lately her grandfather had seen clearly that Wei Zhaodian would neither inherit his craft nor become the Guan family's grandson-in-law, yet Guan Xuemin refused to be left without a successor, so he meant to send Guan Xin to an old friend for further training in traditional Chinese medicine, hoping the Guan family's medical lineage would live on.

But Guan Xin did not much want to leave. For one thing, she did not see herself as doctor material. Being a nurse suited her well enough. At home she helped Guan Xuemin sort and brew medicine, work she knew by heart, but when it came to healing and saving lives on her own, she had no confidence at all.

For another, it would mean leaving Songshan City. Although Wei Zhaodian had already refused quite plainly and would never become the Guan family's grandson-in-law, Guan Xin only wished to guard her own small, quiet happiness, which was to watch him and think of him from afar. Even if they seldom met, they were still in the same city, and now and then their paths might cross, just as they had now...

So Guan Xin did not want to go, yet she did not want to disappoint her grandfather either. She knew he had devoted his life to the study of medicine and hoped his descendants would achieve something in the same field, but she was only an ordinary nurse, and that had left Guan Xuemin deeply disappointed.

Before, Guan Xuemin had doted on Guan Xin and said little about it, but after meeting Wei Zhaodian and talking with him, he felt his granddaughter ought to learn something more. Otherwise she would only fall further behind Wei Zhaodian, and the distance between them would grow wider still.

Guan Xuemin understood what was in Guan Xin's heart, and he himself hoped to bring her and Wei Zhaodian together, which was why he had made this decision and hinted as much to her.

Guan Xin, however, felt that no matter what she became, Wei Zhaodian would never choose her. He already had someone he loved, whom she had met, a very pretty and youthful girl. Why should she wreck another person's happiness?

As for studying, Guan Xin truly felt she was not cut out for it, so she was torn. Seeing Wei Zhaodian now, she suddenly felt an urge to pour her heart out.

"All right... I will go see my friend first, and in the next couple of days I will come pay Grandpa Guan a visit." Since he was about to leave, Wei Zhaodian naturally meant to call on Guan Xuemin, and he also needed to brief Fatty Lai about the pharmaceutical company.

"Mm... Wei Zhaodian... do you... have a moment later?" Guan Xin bit her lip and finally asked.

She was not one to take the initiative, but this matter was serious, and she wanted to talk it over with Wei Zhaodian and hear his opinion. Whatever he said, she would listen.

"More or less. What is it? Is something the matter?" Wei Zhaodian asked.

"I have something I need your advice on..." Guan Xin asked carefully.

"Sure, I will call you when I am done here." In Wei Zhaodian's memory, Guan Xin rarely sought him out on her own. If she was doing so now, it must be something important, and he would hardly refuse.

"Mm!" Seeing him agree, Guan Xin nodded happily, her face flushing faintly with excitement. "Then I will wait for your call!"

"Heh, all right." Wei Zhaodian smiled and agreed.

As he walked through the doors of the inpatient building with Qiu Lingshan, she was sulking. Why was it that when Guan Xin blushed, Wei Zhaodian said nothing, yet when she blushed he called her lovesick? Qiu Lingshan was thoroughly annoyed. Why was she treated so differently from everyone else?

Chen Yutian's ward was the innermost room on the third floor. He had deliberately chosen such a spot to avoid drawing attention, and he had kept his injury a secret. So far only his grandfather and people from a few prominent families knew of it. None of his other friends had been told.

Normally no one came to visit Chen Yutian, apart from Qiu Lingshan, of course.

So when Qiu Lingshan pushed open the ward door, Chen Yutian naturally assumed it was another visit from her, since the nurses and doctors on their rounds had only just left.

"Lingshan, you are here again? Did I not tell you? You have been busy with cases lately, so you need not come to see me. I am a grown man. I can look after myself. It is nothing serious." Chen Yutian said without thinking.

"Brother Yutian, you are hurt. Why did you hide it from me? If I had not come to the hospital to see a friend and run into Qiu Lingshan, I would still know nothing about it." Wei Zhaodian deftly glossed over Qiu Lingshan's part in it with a single phrase, making it sound like a chance meeting rather than a leak on her part.

Qiu Lingshan glanced at Wei Zhaodian with gratitude. Who would have thought he could be so kind to her.

"Wei Zhaodian... you came..." Chen Yutian froze, then looked embarrassed. "I have disappointed you. You just went to such trouble to raise my strength, and now... I have become a cripple, and all your effort has gone to waste."

"Brother Yutian, what kind of talk is that?" Wei Zhaodian frowned when he heard this. "What do you mean, disappointing me? Every debt has its debtor. Yu Feng inflicted your wounds. It is not as if you asked for this. Besides, he is at the mid-Mystic stage while you are at the early-Mystic stage, a full step below him at the peak of the early-Mystic stage. Of course you lost to him. But this grudge, we cannot let go."
