Chapter 663 — Speeding to the Rescue

The Blossom Guardian

But after hearing Shen Yushu's words, Wei Zhao frowned hard. Gu Mengyao had fainted for no apparent reason? What Shen Yushu told him gave Wei Zhao no way to judge her condition; all he could do was wait until they reached the hospital.

"Driver, could you please go a little faster?" Worried about the young lady's safety — and having lived with her day in and day out, Wei Zhao had grown to feel something for her! True, he had been trained since childhood by his master and the old man into a rather cold-blooded man, but people are not grass and trees; who among them can be without feeling?

Gu Mengyao was not merely his employer; Wei Zhao had already come to think of her as a friend! Otherwise he would not have been so anxious. He was her attendant, that was true, but he was no private physician — when Gu Pengzhan first recruited him, he had never mentioned any duty to treat Gu Mengyao!

But the situation now was different. It was from the bottom of his heart that Wei Zhao worried about the young lady, and that was why he kept urging the taxi driver to go faster.

The Second People's Hospital was still some distance off; at the speed they were making, it would take at least over an hour to get there.

"Young man, this car of mine is five years old. Its performance isn't what it used to be — it's dangerous to drive fast, and I don't really dare to push it," the driver said with a bitter smile. "I know you're in a hurry to get to the hospital. Tell you what — I'll drive you somewhere with more traffic, and you can change cars? As for my fare, whether you pay it or not is entirely up to you."

Hearing the taxi driver's words, Wei Zhao could not help shaking his head. It was still a long way to the crowded parts of the city, and Wei Zhao could not wait: "Let me drive. I'll pay the fare as it stands, and I'll give you another five hundred."

With that, Wei Zhao took out his wallet, counted out seven hundred yuan and set it down on the dashboard. The fare from here to the Second Hospital would come to about two hundred yuan, so seven hundred was already a great deal.

The driver hesitated only a moment, then asked: "Young man, do you have a driver's license?"

"I do." Wei Zhao took the license out of his wallet and held it up for the driver to see.

"Good, then you drive!" The driver gladly pocketed the seven hundred yuan, pulled the car over to the side of the road and swapped seats with Wei Zhao.

The driver had figured it out plainly enough: even if Wei Zhao's way of driving burned a little more gasoline, the money would more than cover it — he had even factored in the cost of any violations. So what did he have to lose?

Once behind the wheel, Wei Zhao started the car, engaged the gear and released the clutch in one seamless motion; the moment the car shot forward, he shifted and accelerated without pause, again and again, over and over.

The way Wei Zhao drove gave the driver quite a fright! In no time at all Wei Zhao had already thrown it into fifth gear, still standing on the accelerator, the car tearing down the road like a stallion that had broken its reins!

This was a suburban road with little traffic, but the speed limit was eighty all the same; driving like this, had there been a speed camera, Wei Zhao would surely have been photographed by now. Fortunately this road had no cameras...

Yet once Wei Zhao entered the city proper, he did not slow down — if anything he kept accelerating. As the number of vehicles around them visibly grew, the driver cried out: "Young man, slow down, it's dangerous! Besides, there's a checkpoint up ahead — police!"

"I won't hit anything," Wei Zhao said coolly, still accelerating. The car moved like an afterimage, threading nimbly through the traffic. No sooner had he spoken than it pulled off a drift, scaring the driver half out of his wits — he thought his heart was going to explode!

A drift? No way? He had only ever seen that on television — and now this wreck of his was drifting? Was this fellow some kind of professional racing driver?

He was still mulling this over when, suddenly, police sirens rose from all around the car. Clearly the monitoring center had spotted the anomaly here and dispatched units to intercept him!

"Young man, the police are after us — pull over!" the driver blurted in terror. They were finished now; wouldn't the car be impounded? These seven hundred yuan wouldn't even cover the fine...

Wei Zhao frowned slightly; he had not expected the police to respond so swiftly, to have locked onto his position in such short order! He had no choice but to call Qiu Lingshan. Fortunately she was not inside the headquarters of the kidney-harvesting gang, so her phone had signal, and Wei Zhao got through.

"Hello? Qiu Lingshan?" Without waiting for her to speak, he went straight to the point: "My car has been flagged by the police. I'm on my way to the hospital to save someone. Tell them to stand down."

When Qiu Lingshan received Wei Zhao's call, she had assumed he was asking whether she had already wiped out the kidney gang's lair; she had not expected there to be something else entirely. Still, this time she felt little anger at Wei Zhao's order, and she did not press him with questions; she asked only: "What's your plate number?"

"What's your plate number?" Wei Zhao asked the driver.

"Song 8224." The driver was astonished — this man actually knew Qiu Lingshan? Given the line of work he was in, the name Qiu Lingshan was not one he ought to have known, but while listening to the radio news he happened to catch the report that the newly appointed captain of the criminal investigation detachment, Qiu Lingshan, had cracked a bank robbery and apprehended the robbers, and the name had stuck. Not long ago she had caught another wanted criminal, which made the driver think this police captain was a truly capable woman, and so he remembered the name.

What he had not expected, though, was that Wei Zhao actually knew Qiu Lingshan — and that he spoke to her in a tone that did not sound polite at all. So who on earth was this young man?

Wei Zhao had no time to consider what the driver was thinking; he simply passed the plate number on to Qiu Lingshan.

Qiu Lingshan noted down the plate number and placed a call to the traffic police command center. She could not very well ignore Wei Zhao's business, and he had been quite explicit — he was going to the hospital to save someone. Wait — to the hospital to save someone?

She suddenly recalled a subordinate's earlier report: a mass fainting incident among the students at Songshan No. 1 High School! But because she was tied up with the kidney gang case, she had sent one of her squadron leaders to investigate at the school.

Could it be that Wei Zhao was going to rescue those poisoned students? Thinking that Wei Zhao was himself a student at No. 1 High School and had been hired by Gu Pengzhan, it made sense that he would go to save them! But this fell outside her own jurisdiction, so Qiu Lingshan did not ask any further.

Suddenly, Qiu Lingshan realized that the way Wei Zhao had addressed her just now had not been "brain-dead girl" but her actual name, and her heart gave an unaccountable lurch! Was it because Wei Zhao was in too much of a hurry to have time to tease her, or had his attitude toward her genuinely changed?

Never mind! Whatever he thinks, all that matters is that I keep on good terms with him! Qiu Lingshan had no wish to dwell on these tangled relations, and tossed the thought to the back of her mind.
