Chapter 1221 — The Kang Family's New Probe
"Hubby Wei Zhao, you're not being honest — sneaking out in the middle of the night to see Sister Tang Yun!" Feng Xiaoxiao said with a giggle.
"I didn't come over until after four in the morning..." Wei Zhao's face reddened at once.
Tang Yun was awake by then as well, and hearing Feng Xiaoxiao's words, she too felt rather embarrassed: "Xiaoxiao, I didn't ask him to come — he came on his own..."
"All right, Sister Yunyun, I wasn't saying anything. Isn't this nice? From now on we'll each have half the night, and neither of us loses out!" Feng Xiaoxiao said, laughing.
"Mm..." Feng Xiaoxiao's words left Tang Yun with a pang of feeling. From now on... was there really a "from now on"? Had Wei Zhao found some way to cure Feng Xiaoxiao, or hadn't he?
After breakfast the three drove to school, once again parking the car on the snack street behind the school, and then walked together to the classroom.
Senior year was tense and busy. By the time Wei Zhao reached school, the young lady and Xiaoshu had already arrived; the two of them were at their desks reading. Seeing Wei Zhao and Feng Xiaoxiao enter the classroom, Gu Mengyao nodded to them both. With so many people in the room, it was no place for talk; everything would have to wait until the noon break, when they could ask each other questions.
Kang Xiaobo, though, looked excited today. When he saw Wei Zhao arrive, he turned around: "Morning, Boss! Morning, Sister-in-law!"
"Morning!" Feng Xiaoxiao answered to the title with a smile. Had it been Tang Yun, she would surely have blushed — which was why, whenever outsiders were present, Kang Xiaobo always called Tang Yun by her name.
"What's got you so worked up today?" Wei Zhao frowned.
"Isn't it that Xiaofen's recovered? I'm over the moon!" Kang Xiaobo chuckled. "And yesterday I took her to meet my parents. This time they were both perfectly satisfied!"
"Well, isn't that good? That settles things between the two of you," Wei Zhao said with a nod.
"It is! And I have you to thank for it, Boss. If not for you, I'd never have what I have today," Kang Xiaobo said gratefully.
"Do you actually have something to say, or not, you little brat?" Wei Zhao shot him a glare. "If not, get back to your books."
Wei Zhao had been meaning to talk with Feng Xiaoxiao about the star Xu Shilan, but Kang Xiaobo would not stop chattering.
"I do, of course I do!" Kang Xiaobo lowered his voice. "Boss, guess who called me yesterday?"
"Who?" Wei Zhao asked, frowning. He had not expected Kang Xiaobo to start playing at riddles too.
"Kang Zhaoming!" Kang Xiaobo said.
"Him? What does he want with you?" Wei Zhao was rather surprised. So the Kang family had finally stopped sitting still? Were they trying to buy information from Kang Xiaobo again?
"He wanted to pump me for inside information!" Kang Xiaobo said. "Kang Zhaoming asked me one question after another, roundabout and between the lines, but the gist of it was the supply channels of Doctor Guan's Pharmaceutical Company. And he also made oblique inquiries about whether our Doctor Guan's Pharmaceutical Company had changed the formula for its trauma medicine."
"Oh? And what did you tell him?" Wei Zhao had not expected Kang Zhaoming to be quite so sharp as to spot the problem hidden there. Still, it was no wonder. The Kang family's Golden Wound Medicine contained a great many precious medicinal ingredients, and those were not only costly but also produced in small quantities — supply could not meet demand. That was the main reason the Kang family's Golden Wound Medicine had been running out of stock so often ever since it came on the market!
It was not that the Kang family wished to play at artificial scarcity; they simply could not get enough raw materials, and so could not produce that much medicine.
"I told him nothing, of course. I said I was only a vice president in charge of channel sales; on the production side it was Fatty Lai who ran things, and on the research side Professor Guan personally oversaw everything, so I knew nothing about any of it," Kang Xiaobo said with a smile.
"Mm. But if he wants to keep fishing for information — if he wants to keep handing you money — then there's no need to refuse," Wei Zhao said, smiling.
"Naturally. When a fat sheep comes offering me money, why would I turn it down?" Kang Xiaobo nodded. "Oh, right — when I told him I handled sales, Kang Zhaoming started asking me instead about the factory price of our Doctor Guan trauma medicine. From the sound of it, he seemed to want to place a bulk order?"
"A bulk order?" Wei Zhao was startled.
"Yes. I wondered whether they meant to buy up our product, then repackage it and sell it themselves," Kang Xiaobo said.
"That's possible. But let's wait and see. If they want to buy, let them buy — the factory price is out of the question. They can go find a wholesaler themselves," Wei Zhao said indifferently.
If the Kang family really did such a thing, then once their Golden Wound Medicine was put on the market, it would hand him a perfect chance to strike at them. They would be courting their own destruction! All he had to do was make the news public at the right moment, and the Kang family's pharmaceutical group would be stripped of its good name!
Wei Zhao did not believe that Divine Doctor Kang could be so muddled as to do such a thing.
"Mm, fine. If that Kang Zhaoming kid comes up with anything else, I'll tell you straight away," Kang Xiaobo said with a nod.
Kang Xiaobo turned back around. The physics teacher had come in and was preparing to begin the lesson, so Wei Zhao naturally had to set aside the topic of the star and listen attentively.
And Feng Xiaoxiao seemed to savor this time spent in class with Wei Zhao: deskmates, sweethearts. That exquisite feeling was the finest experience a life could hold, and in the last stretch of her own life, Feng Xiaoxiao naturally did not want to miss any of it.
At noon, Wei Zhao went with Feng Xiaoxiao, Tang Yun, Gu Mengyao, and Shen Yushu to a private room on the second floor of the school cafeteria. With so many of them, it was hardly appropriate to eat in the school's public dining hall; some things were better left unsaid, and they would only give others a spectacle to laugh at.
The cafeteria manager knew Gu Mengyao, the young lady of the family, of course, so when Gu Mengyao made a request, he naturally cleared out a private room on the second floor for her, and it became her own private room every day thereafter.
Though Gu Mengyao disliked the privileges of rich young ladies, for Feng Xiaoxiao's sake she had to use one this time. Otherwise — Wei Zhao with a first wife on his left and a second wife on his right, and herself and Xiaoshu also together with him — a whole nest of beauties; anyone who did not know them would think heaven knows what.
"Xiaoxiao, is your health all right? When I heard yesterday that you had fainted, Xiaoshu and I were badly frightened!" On the surface, Gu Mengyao still knew nothing of Feng Xiaoxiao's imminent death, for the moment at least, Wei Zhao and Tang Yun had found no chance to tell them.
"It's nothing..." Feng Xiaoxiao shook her head. "Probably anemia?"
