Chapter 1229 — I Don't Have Long to Live Anyway
"..." Yet Feng Xiaoxiao still said not a word, as though she had never heard the man speak at all.
"Little girl, do you have a death wish? Believe it or not, I'll strip those clothes off you right now — and then ***?" Seeing that Feng Xiaoxiao still would not speak, the man grew all the more furious and threw out the threat.
"..." Feng Xiaoxiao kept her teeth clenched and said nothing.
"Tell me — are you two putting on a little play for my benefit?" Feng Tianlong had already been more than half convinced by the man's words, certain that Feng Xiaoxiao must be in his hands; but now doubt crept back in. After all, if the man truly belonged to Red Conch and wanted their second-in-command back, he would hardly lie about having Feng Xiaoxiao in his grasp, for there would be no point in it whatsoever.
But now Feng Tianlong was no longer so sure. If Feng Xiaoxiao were in his hands, why was there not the slightest sound from her?
"This girl's a clever one — she knows she's stalling for you!" This time the man laughed instead of raging. "But it doesn't matter. Stall away. Feng Tianlong, believe it or not, that's up to you! But do you know why I'm still talking to you, knowing full well you're tracing my location? Do you know why?"
"Hmph!" Feng Tianlong gave a cold laugh. He disliked being led by the nose like this, so he only grunted — neither saying he wished to know, nor that he did not. If the man meant to tell him, he would tell him; if not, asking would be useless. So Feng Tianlong would not commit himself either way.
"Heh heh, you don't ask, but I can still tell you why!" The man smiled. "Because I'm not in the least afraid of you tracing my location! I can tell you plainly who I am! I am a death warrior trained by the Red Conch organization. You understand what a death warrior is, don't you? I needn't explain it to you again, surely? Though I imagine our captain of the Dragon Edge special agents knows well enough what a death warrior means!"
At these words, Feng Tianlong's expression changed at once! Of course he knew what a death warrior was, and for an international criminal syndicate like Red Conch, training death warriors was only natural. Terrorist organizations of that stripe constantly carried out suicide missions and assassinations — and for that, they needed death warriors.
A death warrior, as the name implies, is a warrior who dares to die. The training these people receive all their lives is preparation for that final moment! Many of them have already been ***, willing to die for the organization, holding their own lives as nothing at all.
Such people are the hardest of all to deal with. Even if you capture one, you will not get a scrap of useful information out of him. Torture him, tempt him with wealth and glory — he simply does not care. Give him the slightest opening and he will kill himself.
"What are you trying to say?" Feng Tianlong's heart tightened. This day's business, he feared, would not end well.
"What I'm saying — don't you understand yet? My purpose is to free the second-in-command, and whether I live or die is of no consequence! Freeing the second-in-command is the only reason I exist in this world!" The man saw nothing amiss in his own words; he spoke as though it were the most natural thing. "I've already planted ** and explosives in the room. You can come up and arrest me, or shoot me dead — but I'll tell you this: the detonator for the explosives is implanted inside my body. The moment my heart stops beating, the detonator will trigger, and I'd say there's enough explosive there to blow this twenty-odd-story building to rubble! And when that happens, not only will your daughter be gone, every innocent resident in this building will be blown to bits! Wahaha — when I think of it, my death is really worth something, with so many people to accompany me!"
"You—" Feng Tianlong was both shocked and enraged by the man's words. He did not doubt for a moment that the man was lying, for the Red Conch criminal organization had always carried a heavy stench of terror about it, and this man was a death warrior; nine times out of ten, what he said was true.
"You what? Feels good, doesn't it? And let me warn you too: don't waste your effort trying to take me alive. The moment I'm caught, I'll bite through the poison capsule in my mouth and kill myself — and the bomb will still go off!" the man said, not without menace.
"Aren't you afraid I'll evacuate everyone in the building first?" Feng Tianlong laughed rather than raged. "Wouldn't that leave you with far fewer chips?"
"Fine, no problem. You can evacuate the building. But I don't believe you'll give up your daughter!" the man said indifferently. "My purpose is simple: release our organization's second-in-command, and once I receive word that he is safe, I'll leave of my own accord and won't blow up the building. Otherwise — heh heh — you know the consequences!"
Feng Xiaoxiao stared at the man before her, somewhat shaken. She had not expected him to be so ruthless! A death warrior indeed — he had long since put life and death beyond him, and to achieve his aim he would not hesitate to pay with his own life.
Earlier, Feng Xiaoxiao had still been worried that the innocent residents of the building would be dragged into it, but after hearing the exchange between her father and the man, she clenched her teeth and made up her mind!
Feng Xiaoxiao knew very well that once her father decided to release Red Conch's second-in-command, his career and future would be finished — he might even be punished by his superiors! Though it was Feng Tianlong who had captured the man, it was not for him to simply set him free.
And Feng Xiaoxiao did not want her father to make a mistake on her account. Her father had been upright all his life, giving up so very much for his work — how could she let him lose his career because of her?
She had only a few days left to live anyway. Two attacks already, each worse than the last, and to save her, Wei Zhao had spent vast amounts of true qi — and his blood besides. To go on like this would only pile more burdens on him!
She would die sooner or later; better to die somewhere it meant something, to give her death some meaning!
"Dad, don't worry about me, don't listen to him! Once you've evacuated the residents, just let him blow me up — I don't have long to live anyway!" Feng Xiaoxiao suddenly cried out.
On the other end of the line, Feng Tianlong was startled to hear his daughter's voice, but at her words a great wave of feeling rose in him, and tears nearly burst from his eyes in that instant! His daughter was willing to make such a sacrifice for his sake!
Though what Feng Xiaoxiao said was true, and Feng Tianlong knew her life was nearly at its end — the two fainting spells before had been warning enough! Whether Wei Zhao could save her from the next one was anyone's guess!
