Chapter 1262 — Resistance Is Futile. "How Is It the Leader of the North District Acts Like a Dog!" Ying Ziyu Was Sickened by the Sight of Zou Ruoguang. She Had Once Rather Admired Him, Thinking That a Man So Young Who Had Become Leader of the North District Must Surely Be Formidable; Today, However, She Saw at a Glance That He Was Nothing but a Bootlicker!

The Blossom Guardian

And when she heard him promise Wei Zhao that he would keep an eye on her and not let her go out running with the underworld anymore, Ying Ziyu was even more out of sorts, and could not help throwing in a mocking word. With Wei Zhao there, she had nothing to fear, after all.

Had this been any other time, the remark Ying Ziyu made to Zou Ruoguang would have brought her nothing but trouble; but now Zou Ruoguang did not mind at all. He turned his head with a grin and said to Ying Ziyu, "Miss Ziyu, don't blame this lowly one, my lot is a hard one too! Noble as you are, the great Master Lin's sworn sister and all, this lowly one still has to do as Master Lin says, doesn't he? Otherwise this lowly one is the one who'll suffer..."

Watching Zou Ruoguang's fawning, Ying Ziyu felt a chill of disgust run through her; the man was truly beyond curing.

"Whatever, whatever! All you do is push people around!" Ying Ziyu grabbed Wei Zhao's arm and bit down on it.

Wei Zhao had not reckoned on such a move from her and was caught off guard; though if he had wanted to dodge, he could easily have done so. He flung his arm, and Ying Ziyu was thrown a good three feet away, landing steadily on her feet.

Missing her bite, Ying Ziyu grew angrier still.

"Asking for a beating, are you?" Wei Zhao glanced at her. "No tricks. Come with me and get your hair dyed."

By now Ying Ziyu's underlings had a clear view of things: the underworld order of Fushan Middle School was about to turn upside down. Nan Feilong had been beaten into a cripple and would surely vanish from Fushan Middle School; and Ying Ziyu had suddenly been seized by an older "brother" and dragged off to study properly. The key was that this brother was terrifyingly capable: not only was he a terror in a fight, but Zou Ruoguang, the leader of the North District, bowed and scraped before him.

And so only the second-largest force was left, unrivalled. Who would have thought the number two would be the one to reap the spoils?

Still, these underlings knew they could not follow Ying Ziyu any longer; even if they wanted to, Wei Zhao would never allow it, and whoever tried would come to a very ugly end.

Wei Zhao hauled Ying Ziyu along, nodded to Zou Ruoguang, and turned to leave with Feng Xiaoxiao.

Zou Ruoguang, for his part, saw him off with a face full of deference, chanting without pause, "Master Lin, mind how you go!"

"Enough flattery. Remember what I said." Wei Zhao instructed him coolly. "But if anyone bullies her, I'll come to you for that too!"

"Never!" Zou Ruoguang said hurriedly. "Miss Ziyu is Master Lin's sister, which makes her my young mistress! Miss Ziyu, from now on this old servant will watch over you!"

"Pfft—" At Zou Ruoguang's words Ying Ziyu nearly spat out a laugh. Yet at the same time a sense of accomplishment such as she had never known filled her heart.

Once, Ying Ziyu had dreamed of unifying the underworld of Songshan City, of every district leader bowing his head to her; but she knew it was only a pretty wish. A woman born to gang life was at a disadvantage from the start, and could never go far.

Yet today she had at last tasted a measure of it. Watching Zou Ruoguang defer to Wei Zhao with such reverence, Ying Ziyu realized that her wish had been granted in another form.

She wondered when Li Cihua, the big boss of Songshan City, would flatter her like that.

"What are you rolling your eyes about? Hatching some new scheme? I'm telling you, starting tomorrow you're going to study properly! I'll have someone come and test you at regular intervals; fail a test, and it's a hundred smacks on that bottom of yours!" Wei Zhao glared at her in warning.

Toward Ying Ziyu, Wei Zhao showed not the least gallantry; in his eyes she was a child, and so he truly treated her as a little sister.

"N... nothing!" Ying Ziyu ventured. "Then if I go and run with Li Cihua, you can't boss me around anymore, right?"

"Go ahead and try. If he dares take you in, I'll burn his Geli Fuyun Bar to the ground," Wei Zhao said with a frown, in a mild voice.

"Oh..." This time Ying Ziyu felt not a flicker of disappointment; she was rather thrilled. Wei Zhao was not afraid of Li Cihua either? This brother of hers, this captain, seemed to be quite something. If she followed him, wouldn't she have a fine future ahead of her?

But he did not seem to be one of the underworld. Zou Ruoguang called him Master Lin. What did Master Lin mean? Was he some shaman who danced for the gods? Surely not?

"So it really was my brother who sent you to look after me?" Once in the taxi, Ying Ziyu's feelings settled; knowing she could not resist, she could only accept her fate.

"Mm." Wei Zhao nodded. The thought of Pangolin cast a shadow over his mood.

"My brother... where is he now? Why doesn't he come back?" Ying Ziyu asked.

"He's gone on a special mission, and may not be back for a long while. Your brother told me you're about to sit the high school entrance exams, so he asked me to come and look in on you and keep you at your books," Wei Zhao said.

"Oh... it's been so long since I saw my brother." Ying Ziyu sighed. "Do you think someone like me could pass into high school?"

"Start studying tomorrow and you can," Wei Zhao said mildly.

"Running the streets, you can make something of yourself at that too, can't you?" Ying Ziyu asked cautiously.

"Bullshit. Look at Zou Ruoguang. I could kick him to death more easily than I could step on an ant." Wei Zhao sighed. Ying Ziyu was at the age of youthful rebellion, at its very worst stage: children that age were impulsive, worshipped violence, and craved thrills.

In their eyes a gang boss was a mighty being, and Ying Ziyu was no exception. But Wei Zhao had to give her a proper outlook on life and tell her that Zou Ruoguang had no future, and that even Li Cihua had no future.

"Then what do you do?" Ying Ziyu countered.

"I used to be your brother's colleague; now I'm a student." Wei Zhao did not hide it; sooner or later Ying Ziyu would learn who he was.

"A student?" Ying Ziyu was taken aback and looked at Wei Zhao strangely. "You're a student?"

"Mm. Songshan First High School. I've come back to study," Wei Zhao said. "Why so many questions? Take care of yourself first."

Ying Ziyu pursed her lips; she chafed at Wei Zhao's heavy-handed style of home tutoring, yet she had no way to resist it.

What could she use against him? The people she thought so formidable groveled in his presence; Ying Ziyu did not imagine she could out-argue Wei Zhao. Above all, Wei Zhao seemed to know nothing of tenderness for a girl, treating her wholly as a child, and that left her with no move to make.

She could not even be bothered to play the damsel's wiles. She had a feeling that if she tried such tricks on Wei Zhao, all she would get in return was a helping of stir-fried bamboo shoots and pork.
