Chapter 1995 — Being Followed

The Blossom Guardian

"You could put it that way." Seeing that Wei Zhao showed not the slightest surprise, Feng Sanhuang became all the more convinced that the man was no ordinary person. "Brother Lin, if I may be so bold—what is your current cultivation level?"

"Earth rank," Wei Zhao said, making no attempt to hide it. He did not specify whether it was the early, middle, or late stage of the Earth rank, however; after all, he and Feng Sanhuang were not well acquainted, and Wei Zhao did not care to say too much.

"Hiss—" Feng Sanhuang drew a sharp breath. The last time he had seen Wei Zhao, the man had been an expert at the peak of the middle Mystic rank. And now he was already Earth rank?

He thought back to what Wei Zhao had said to him before: Do not imagine that because you are an inner-family expert at the peak of the late Mystic rank, you can boast such words before me. Could it be that Wei Zhao had been Earth rank all along, and had merely suppressed his power to the peak of the middle Mystic rank—rather than being Earth rank?

If that were truly the case, then he himself had so arrogantly threatened Wei Zhao—the very thought made Feng Sanhuang's face burn. No wonder Wei Zhao had shown no fear at all back then and had simply thrown the threat right back at him. So the man had been suppressing his strength all along...

Of course, Feng Sanhuang would never imagine that Wei Zhao could have leapt from the peak of the middle Mystic rank to Earth rank in the space of a mere few months. That rate of advancement was like riding a rocket—to break through even a single minor stage in a few months would already be impressive!

"Brother Lin, I gave offense before. Miss Xu's safety for a while yet will have to be entrusted to you!" Feng Sanhuang's attitude toward Wei Zhao had grown even more respectful.

Wei Zhao waved a hand and said nothing further. Instead he pointed toward the hotel. "They are coming out. Let us drop this subject."

"Right!" Wei Zhao's words suited Feng Sanhuang perfectly—he had not wanted to discuss such matters in front of Xu Shilan anyway.

"Xiaohan!" Wei Zhao called out in greeting to Xu Shilan. As for Cheng Yiyi, he merely nodded to her.

Cheng Yiyi did not seem to mind much, though, nor did she seem to care for talking to Wei Zhao. She pulled Xu Shilan into the business van; Wei Zhao took the front passenger seat, while Feng Sanhuang naturally served as driver.

Though Feng Sanhuang was unfamiliar with Donghai City's layout, as Xu Shilan's dedicated driver he was excellent at finding his way. A few glances at the navigation were enough for him to know the route.

He started the car and drove straight to Donghai City's most prosperous commercial pedestrian street.

The whole way, Xu Shilan and Cheng Yiyi talked about something or other, but Wei Zhao had no interest in listening—mostly it was talk of beauty treatments, makeup, how to look pretty, how to keep a good figure.

After a few turns, Feng Sanhuang arrived at the commercial pedestrian street and parked the car in a nearby lot.

"I never imagined Donghai City's commercial pedestrian street would still be this bustling so late!" Xu Shilan said in surprise, gazing at the streets outside the window.

"Donghai City is the provincial capital—naturally there are plenty of shops open around the clock," Wei Zhao said.

"Thank you, Wei Zhao. Coming out shopping with us so late—I'm sorry to have disturbed your rest," Xu Shilan said gratefully.

Cheng Yiyi, however, frowned. For an ordinary person, accompanying a big star out was an enormous honor—Zhang Duopan had wanted to tag along, and she had refused him. So why did Xu Shilan seem almost to be begging Wei Zhao?

"It's no trouble," Wei Zhao said. He and Feng Sanhuang walked behind Xu Shilan and Cheng Yiyi, looking for all the world like their bodyguards.

Xu Shilan probably seldom had the chance to go shopping; everything she saw struck her as novel. Wei Zhao could not help but reflect that though a big star seemed glamorous, she truly had little free time—every day was nothing but work and more work.

Cheng Yiyi, by contrast—perhaps because she had only recently debuted—knew a great deal about various brands and shops, and it was mainly she who led Xu Shilan around.

Feng Sanhuang, meanwhile, was tense all over, on guard at every moment. His eyes swept back and forth across the surroundings without pause, as though afraid of missing something.

His earnestness was almost too much for Wei Zhao, who did not know whether to laugh or cry. "Sanhuang, is this really necessary? Relax a little—otherwise I fear that after all this walking, Xiaohan will be fine, but you will have worried yourself to death."

"Brother Lin, I must strangle danger in its cradle!" Feng Sanhuang said with a bitter smile. "I am not like you. I must guarantee Miss Xu's safety absolutely—especially after what happened this afternoon..."

"It's fine. I'm watching for you. If there's danger, I'll warn you in advance," Wei Zhao said.

But though Wei Zhao said so, Feng Sanhuang noticed that the man did not seem to be constantly on guard, and so he did not relax even a fraction.

In his view, Wei Zhao was, after all, an outsider; no matter what, he could not be expected to care as deeply. Feng Sanhuang, however, was different.

Seeing Feng Sanhuang's manner, Wei Zhao shrugged and smiled slightly, and said nothing more.

The four of them walked on, covering most of the shops along the pedestrian street. Xu Shilan seemed to have a particular addiction to browsing—even the shops selling phone cases and little trinkets drew her in, and she would not reluctantly leave until she had bought one or two small items.

This only made Wei Zhao sigh to himself in wonder.

Wei Zhao nodded without answering, for he too sensed that something was off!

Earlier Wei Zhao had teased Feng Sanhuang for being so cautious, but at this moment he had the feeling of being followed and watched—a feeling that came entirely from the sixth sense he had honed while carrying out missions in the primeval forests!
