Chapter 2774 — The Gale-Chasing Lightning Boots
So Wei Zhao began running toward the edge of Snow Valley as best he could, meaning to circle around and then make his way out through the valley's main gate...
But Wei Zhao's sudden change of direction made the Supreme Elder's heart lurch violently—it nearly exploded from the fright!
The direction Wei Zhao was running in was exactly where Tang Yun was cultivating. If Wei Zhao kept running that way, there was no telling but that he might draw Tang Yun out! When that happened, Wei Zhao seeing Tang Yun would be a small matter—after all, Wei Zhao did not know Tang Yun—but if Tang Yun should step forward to defend him, how could she, an early Heaven Rank expert, possibly be a match for this late Heaven Rank man in black? If anything were to happen to Tang Yun, the Supreme Elder would regret it beyond all remedy!
At that thought, the Supreme Elder no longer dared to sit back and enjoy the show. She flew straight down from Snow Valley's highest peak and drifted toward the man in black. Without a word, before the man in black had any chance to react, a snow-white jade ruyi was already before him. The ruyi instantly enlarged, transforming into a vast expanse of misty white that enveloped the man in black. The next moment, the ruyi returned to the Supreme Elder's hand, and the man in black had become a snow sculpture, every inch of him covered in mist-attribute crystals. With a thunderous crash he toppled to the ground, lifeless...
This jade ruyi was naturally the Supreme Elder's Heaven Rank weapon—a water-attribute Heaven Rank weapon as well. Though paired with her mist-attribute mental cultivation method it could produce quite decent results, it was still a notch inferior to the mist-attribute Heaven Rank divine weapon Wei Zhao had brought.
But the Supreme Elder's strength spoke for itself. With a lift of her hand, she killed without leaving a trace...
The man in black had been chasing Wei Zhao in the playful spirit of a cat toying with a mouse. In his mind, Wei Zhao would eventually run out of strength and be captured by him. Moreover, when he had entered Snow Valley, from the initial obstruction by the valley's disciples to the later indifference of everyone, the man in black had taken it to mean that Snow Valley was giving the Blood Robe Yellow Springs Sect face, allowing him to chase his man here undisturbed. The man in black had been gloating—never imagining that a jade ruyi would descend upon him and he would die!
Still, his death could be called painless—frozen to death in an instant, without suffering.
The Supreme Elder's sudden appearance and sudden strike left Wei Zhao stunned. Only when he saw the man in black lying dead on the ground did Wei Zhao realize he had been wrong: this man was not from Snow Valley! Otherwise, however magnanimous Snow Valley might be, it could not casually kill off a late Heaven Rank expert!
In truth, the man in black had died most unjustly. By rights, he was a late Heaven Rank expert, only a single minor grade below the Supreme Elder. Had the two of them fought fair and square, blade against blade, then even if the man in black could not win, he need not necessarily have been killed in a single blow—at the very least, he could have fled.
But as things stood, he had assumed Snow Valley was giving him face. With Wei Zhao running ahead and himself chasing behind, he had not the slightest sense of caution. And the Supreme Elder had struck directly with a divine weapon, while the man in black had not even drawn his own weapon before he died. His death was truly fitting.
In fact, though, even if he had drawn a Heaven Rank divine weapon it would have been useless, for his divine weapon simply could not be used to attack! Though his late Heaven Rank strength was high, in actual combat power he was not as formidable as an ordinary late Heaven Rank expert—he relied on a different kind of ability altogether!
Otherwise, with his late Heaven Rank strength, he could never have teamed up with two experts whose strength differed so greatly from his own to hunt down and kill Wei Zhao.
Once the Supreme Elder made her move, the other Snow Valley disciples naturally could not remain bystanders any longer, and they all hurried over...
"What is that noise? Why is it so rowdy?" Tang's mother was somewhat angry. She had finally managed to have a quiet word with her daughter, yet from outside the room came one clamorous sound after another, which made her furious! Snow Valley was usually quite peaceful—what on earth was going on today?
"Mother, something has probably come up. Never mind it..." Tang Yun did not much care.
"No, I must go out and see!" Tang's mother stood up and strode out of Tang Yun's separate courtyard with a frown, meaning to see who was making such a racket—and then to extort a little something out of them to save for Wei Zhao...
Only when the disciples crowded around did Wei Zhao snap out of it. He stared at the Supreme Elder in some disbelief, utterly puzzled and bewildered by what had just happened. Why had the Supreme Elder suddenly struck, silently and without warning? Why had she not struck before?
Wei Zhao could not fathom it, no matter how he tried!
"Many thanks to the Supreme Elder for saving my life!" Whatever the case, the Supreme Elder had saved Wei Zhao's life, so Wei Zhao cupped his fists and thanked her gratefully.
"Mm..." The Supreme Elder gave a faint grunt. She had not wanted to save Wei Zhao at all—striking had been forced upon her—so she said perfunctorily, "Think nothing of it. The man is dead. You may leave with an easy mind!"
"I truly am most grateful!" Wei Zhao said. "But might I ask the Supreme Elder to tell me just what sort of sect this Blood Robe Yellow Springs Sect is? Why do they want to kill me?"
"What? Why do they want to kill you? You ask me that—who am I supposed to ask?" The Supreme Elder was startled and looked at Wei Zhao rather strangely. "The Blood Robe Yellow Springs Sect is an assassin organization. Of course, it differs from the assassin organizations of the secular world. They too are the sort of organization that takes a man's money to spare him calamity, except that they only accept contracts to assassinate cultivators. If the target is not a cultivator but an ordinary person, they will not take the job. This is a rule laid down at the ancient summit council."
"An assassin organization?" Wei Zhao was astonished. "So someone paid to hire an assassin to kill me?"
"Perhaps. Or perhaps you killed some of their people by mistake, and they have come to take revenge," the Supreme Elder explained.
"Killed their people by mistake?" Wei Zhao could not for the life of him recall whom he might have killed by mistake, to offend such an inexplicable organization. He was familiar enough with assassin organizations in the secular world, but this was at the level of cultivators. From what the Supreme Elder meant, the assassin organizations of the two levels had nothing to do with each other at all—so Wei Zhao had even less connection to them. How could he have provoked them?
"Mm, that is enough. Hurry back now. Since you have provoked them, you must be on your guard. They failed to kill you this time and lost a Heaven Rank expert—they may let the matter drop, but they may also redouble their efforts to take revenge on you. You had best go back and make preparations at once," the Supreme Elder said flatly.
"Redouble their efforts?" Wei Zhao's expression changed at once! (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, you are welcome to come to Qidian and cast recommendation votes and monthly votes. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
